Did you watch the 2015 Dark Matter or the new 2024 (Blake Crouch) one? Completely different stories.
The Blake Crouch book and series are excellent, really mind-twisting as you get deeper into it.

Excellent work Matt... That UP80 idea with Lamination is a Genius ldea, and l'm guessing it can be used on other Metals.
Laminate l believe starts working at around 120c, so it makes it a great choice for most hifi mods, especially when you consider atoz was reporting up to 46c inside his X26 DAC. Just goes to show, what can be accomplished when we all work together.
I also heard good reports of UP80 being placed underneath or on top of a component bringing a noticeable improvement, although l haven't tried this myself.
The cascading of switches is a bizzare tweek that works, l couldn't believe it myself, until l checked it out myself, but those internal mods are a nice as well.
Congratulations Matt 👏 lt's great to see you get your rewards, after putting in your hard labour.

All these mods and upgrades have brought my system to a level I didn’t know existed and all not much money. I’ve upgraded main components in the past and not got anywhere near the performance increases that can be had with these DIY mods and adding switches. Putting two 12v 9Ah batteries into the new(used) UPS is the job for the weekend. They will replace the standard 7Ah batteries.

Putting two 12v 9Ah batteries into the new(used) UPS is the job for the weekend. In my case, we swapped out three huge APC UPS batteries at work one morning last week. Bloomin' back-breaking, that was. And nerve-racking as we were doing it live with the core network running.

After all the DAC cable talk, here's one that didn't work, that I decided to take apart to look whats inside. Untitled by Matt Hoyle, on Flickr Untitled by Matt Hoyle, on Flickr I added a Nichicon Capacitor to the second switch. Untitled by Matt Hoyle, on Flickr Untitled by Matt Hoyle, on Flickr I modded the Zerozone lps so I could power 2 devices. Excellent work Matt, and photos for members to follow. Million Dollar question,in Sounds terms what improvements can you hear. All these steps brought similar improvements in greater imaging, quieter background and more detail. Adding the Nichicon cap was quite noticeable, but putting switch 1 onto the zerozone was one of those new levels of detail moments where you hear parts of tracks or the way they sound in a different way than previously. Now I need an lps for my 2nd switch.

So the new Zerozone lps is for my 2nd Cisco 2960 switch. Previously, I had put the faraday cage over the internal smps and installed the capacitors to filter the DC output. Untitled by Matt Hoyle, on Flickr I removed the smps and wired in a GX16-2 connector and moved the capacitors into a better location. Untitled by Matt Hoyle, on Flickr Initial impressions are that this is a very worthwhile upgrade. Better holographic imaging, better timing and I can follow all the seperate parts of the music more easily.

After leaving all the changes above to settle for a number of weeks, I decided to try a different Ethernet cable between the incoming FMC and router.
I have been using an Aliexpress “Odin” cable for a long time, so swapped in an Amazon Akake cat8 cable. Initially it sounded very quiet and detailed, but after giving it a week or 2, I felt it had robbed life and energy from the music.
I ordered another Linkup Cat8. I’ve been using these between router and switch 1 and switch 2 to Dac. Great cable. I replaced the Akake cable from FMC to router. Immediately the energy and foot tapping flow of the system and the way sound projects out into the room was there in spades. The system is at one of those stages where I’m content(for a while).
Kemp sns plugs are on offer. Maybe another might have to be tested.
