Elgar’s oratorio The Kingdom. Andrew Davis conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus and the BBC National Chorus of Wales, with soloists Erin Wall (soprano: Blessed Virgin), Catherine Wyn-Rogers (mezzo: Mary Magdalene), Andrew Staples (tenor: St John) and Christopher Purves (baritone: St Peter).

We're going tomorrow night for some Elgar, Liszt and Mussorgsky. Chinese Philharmonic Orchestra (they could be very good), Haochen Zhang on piano and the lovely Alison Balsom on trumpet. It's live on R3 and is being recorded for broadcast on BBC Four on 27 July.

Living in Edinburgh, we are lucky to get quite a few visiting orchestras. For example, I went to hear the Moscow Philharmonic conducted by Yuri Simonov (with Natalie Clein on cello) a couple of months ago, it was quite a performance. Simonov was hilarious, he was proper old school . I've never seen such expansive gestures by a conductor before. I'll listen to last night's prom today at work and record the Chinese Phil to watch on TV. Hope you enjoy the experience, I've never been to the Albert Hall but would like to go. Lawrence

It's certainly worth a visit for its ambience and history, but as you say, you are well placed in Edinburgh for quality classical concerts!

Jammy you really should do it sometime, it is lots of fun and am sure you could find something you could enjoy ... Just a bit of a tip for you and anyone else who fancies trying it for the first time next year. It's essential to sign up for the on-line 'Proms Planner' where you put in a request for the tickets you want. You also have to put in your request asap after the box office opens - the on-line 'waiting room' time can be horrendous if you aren't prompt. I managed to oversleep this year and as a result got really disappointing tickets for the one Prom I was booking for!

Very interesting Prom tonight at 7.30!
My favourite piano concerto, Rach 2 with Denis Matsuev on the keys followed by Tchaikovsky 5 ...
Will be interesting to see how the Qatar Philharmonic fare under the baton of cellist Han-Na Chang.
