Now that I've seen the picture I believe I've got a pretty good idea of what it is and what it does.

Using one of these in a HiFi system has to be taking a big step closer to the temple of foo.

Finally got hold of this and had a play around.
Bit of a PITA to use. The results seem to give more space in everything, between instruments, notes giving great separation and certainly the width that martin spoke of. The space and airiness is interesting. Trying to get my head around if this is right or not.

I got the XLR adapter just before sending it on. As always, XLR cables benefit less from improvements than single-ended phono but it was still worth doing. PITA to use, I agree.

Does it work on optical cables?

Didn't try it, Chris. The result could be illuminating.

Revisiting after a crazy night.
Closest thing I can think of is this is like pressing the "Loudness" switch. Everything seems louder with the volume set normal and the DB meter agreeing.
Martin could that be a good metaphor for you too ?

I'd go with louder but clearer.
