Just a bit of fun but I was wondering if there are bits of hifi that grated on you so much that you get the shudders just thinking about them. Ive had a few over the years, but here is a pic of one particular "offender" to start the thread.

Interesting subject matter for a thread. Quite interesting so respect due to the OP. I cannot possibly contribute but would say Chord Dac's in general leave me cold.

Heybrook HB1s were my most painful speaker experience, There was an incredible midband hardness that inflicted pain like no dentist has ever managed. Duffest speakers were Musical Fidelity MC4. Sounded like they had a 6 inch layer of cotton wool glued to the fronts.
It will be interesting to see how many items mentioned are unbearably harsh/bright and how many are dull and lifeless. The former would usually be more memorable to me.

A Harman Kardon HD980 CD player. It sounded bloody awful and continued to make my life a misery even when I sold it as the buyer tried to convince me, and eBay, that it had arrived damaged. He did not succeed.

The HK definitely falls into the " harsh/bright" category.

I would run in the other direction from Every KI signature that I've ever heard, Actually, I'd do the same with anything bearing a Marantz logo, especially their CD players.

My Dad had a pair of these Lumley speakers on loan from John Jeffries when he used to own Lumley and Sounds of Music in Tumbridge Wells. They were just crap!

Helius Aureus arm. Shocking piece of u-bend that did nothing a good arm should do, like track properly or sound good. The stiction on the bearings was a joke.

Linn basik/basik plus tonearm. I wouldn't use vinyl at all if I had to have one of them. Such a weak link on any half decent deck. The old basik Lvv is said to be even worse. I can't contemplate what "worse" would sound like. The budget Jelcos were much cheaper than the Linn arms and so much better.

Beaten by an Arcam Alpha I picked up for free previously

Naim NAC112 - the worst Naim product I have ever heard. I owned it for a few months and it was so dull and lacking in resolution. In fact is was lacking in everything as a lot of Naim products are - not all mind you, I like the CDP's Oh, and I had a Marantz CDP once. Never again

They just seem so much more musical than so many others. I haven't had a 112 but I haven't heard a good word about it.
