Having got an HDMI de-embedder in my system to, hopefully, extract the hi-res soundtracks from said discs in LPCM format, i started to scour Ebay etc. for suitable discs. Eeeeek ! Not only is there a far, far more limited range of music available than CD (or pretty much any other format for that matter) but what there is costs an arm and a leg - tens and tens of pounds in many cases. Given CDs are worth diddly squat these days how has this happened ? Am i looking in the wrong place ? Do i have to spend my waking hours picking through the usual dross found in charity shops hoping for the occasional jewel ? And is it even worth it ? Given i would be extremely hard pressed to tell the difference between a 16/44 and 24/192 version of the same recording, is there anything else ‘special’ about DVD-A and blu ray audio releases from a purely audio perspective ?

Choose carefully, not all DVD-A / Blu-ray / SACD are worth the money. See this thread for recommendations.
