Sad days if Maplin goes under. I remember well their very first catalogue (involving a science fiction depiction of component delivery) in the 1970s and have used them for years for my main component orders. While their focus has necessarily shifted away from components in more recent years, I still have a soft spot for them. Computing Article

Sad.
My guess is credit insurance is not far removed from factoring. Had bad experiences with suppliers who used factoring companies. One step to going bust os often

Ten years ago, I'd have missed them. Sadly they have reaped what they've sown: The transformation from a great electronic components retail chain to a chav's paradise gadget store was always going to end this way.
Three or four times in succession, I trailed to my nearest big store to find they no longer stocked basic bits. Plenty room for mini helicopters, bedroom disco lights and laser pens for hooligans though. I gave up on them as a lost cause and just ordered from Rapid or EBay.
To me, they became an irrelevance. Sorry for anyone losing their job though. I hope it leads to new beginnings for them.

I always try to buy from them whenever I can, even if it takes a couple of days to order stuff in and ends up a couple of quid more than eBay. Better stock up on 1.5mm enamel wire and DC sockets...

It 's a real shame. I have happy memories of buying transistors and Vero Board in another lifetime.

I nearly went to work on their website, years ago, but I got a better offer...which then fell through.

Read the BBC page earlier. They didn't keep up so had too little to offer

I was pleased to see that Maplin have resurrected - I've no idea when. They are back as a web-only supplier here: www.maplin.co.uk/Does anyone remember their early catalogues? I had all of them, including that early Concorde one.

I purchased something from them a couple of months ago. Good price if I recall. But fulfilled (i.e. mailed out) by a different company. Item was fine but I wonder what the return process would be if needed.
The old Maplins were great for Bits n Bobs - occasionally some nice toys.
