If I swap and it turns to sh1t (and how lucky am I with tech ?) It won't be just you. The entire neighbourhood will blame you for ruining their lovely 4G service! As I'm regarded as the most switched on to tech in the road (!) some of them will want me to sort it

There are downsides to being a messianic cult leader I'm afraid, Mike! Where you lead, they will follow.

Before I waste my time...
Advice online suggests changing frequencies and channels on the router to improve even fix the wifi
Worth a punt ? Safe for little old me ?

Hmm - surely it's not like you are surrounded by lots of different wi-fi signals in MikeMusic Towers are you?

It should all be auto in a half decent router, Mike. They will select the best frequency based on what other SSIDs they can see around them.
Get a decent wi-fi analyser app for your phone and you'll be able to see what it's doing.

There are up to 30 wireless networks 'visible' in our apartment in addition to ours and we do not have problems with interference particularly. The Ubiqiti WAPs are set to select the channel they use automatically and seem to make a good job of avoiding conflicts. There are fewer networks 'visible' in the studio though.
How many can you detect, Mike?

We are a reasonable distance from neighbours so it is only vaguely possible there is as conflict <sigh> BTW my 'non technical' neighbour has installed and is "using an Extender & a Ubiquiti Access point" to cover all of his house Now petea how difficult might this be for the technically tentative ? What bits do I need ?

It can be quite simple, Mike. There are 2 options; either you use a Unify controller and connect the AP using that or, and probably the best for you, you use the AP in stand-alone mode. This is the link to the instructions: help.ui.com/hc/en-us/articles/360047417733-UniFi-Setting-up-a-UniFi-Access-Point-in-Standalone-ModeYou may not need an extender if you can plug the AP into your router. Given the problems you've been having with WiFi I would probably turn off the WiFi in the router once the AP is up and running.

I have no experience with their home range, but the reviews seem favourable. This would allow you to ditch your current router and give you a mesh WiFi setup that might even resolve the outhouse issue too. It has 4 wired ports in case you have wired network devices to integrate. And they do this black version and that is bound to work better! www.comms-express.com/products/ubiquiti-afi-g-uk-amplifi-hd-whole-home-wifi-mesh/We use Comms Express for most of our network equipment and they have never let us down.

Don't use extenders, they're always giving trouble. Use a proper mesh system with as many APs as you need. We have 5 and it covers the whole barn. You connect only one to the router and disable the router's own wi-fi.

Martin Confirming a Ubiquiti Access point not Mesh then...

That Ubiqiti router package includes 2 APs that are mesh enabled (not extenders) which should give you pretty good coverage. If not, you can just add extra APs. A mesh enable AP allows you to 'extend' the range of the WiFi by 'talking' to other APs in the network (a bit like cellular telephone networks).
