February 2018: Franz Liszt - Années de Pèlerinage (Years of Pilgrimage) Vol. 1 First Year: SwitzerlandJenö Jandó (1993, Naxos 8.550548) Années de Pèlerinage (Years of Pilgrimage) is a set of three suites for solo piano by Franz Liszt. I have chosen the first volume because it contains a piece I love - No. 2. Au lac de Wallenstadt (At the Lake of Wallenstadt) Here's the whole album on Spotify

Nice one Chris, will be interesting to see how this compares to my Brendel recording of this work.

I find solo piano music is a bit hit and miss with me. Satie is brilliant, Beethoven is sublime in parts but much of the standard repertoire doesn't work for me. These Liszt pieces were unknown to me before now. They're variable and No.2 and No.3 are my favourites but others I could leave. Overall, not a reflection on your choice Chris but I can't think that I would choose to buy these works by any performer. 5/10 and I would vote but there is no poll

I've only just started listening, and I should probably declare that I'm not a fan of Liszt's piano music. A lot of it is far too strident to my ear and can contain little or no subtlety, especially in the wrong hands. Jandó, however, is a stalwart of Naxos recordings, and everything I've heard him play he's played well so I'll stick with it. My first impression is of there being too much reverb.

A three from me. Not as stark and one-dimensional as some Liszt recordings I've been subjected to.

I'll give it three for the performance and four for the composition.
I really like this work and whilst it's not a bad performance by any means, there is more enjoyment to be had from this work IMO.
For maximum 'illumination' to bring out the full intricacies and depth of the writing, I would seek out the Brendel performance on Philips that I mentioned earlier. The way he shapes the phrases, his finesse and use of dynamics is preferable to my ears ...

A nice quote from Liszt which sums up his motivation for the three suites -
< Having recently travelled to many new countries, through different settings and places consecrated by history and poetry; having felt that the phenomena of nature and their attendant sights did not pass before my eyes as pointless images but stirred deep emotions in my soul, and that between us a vague but immediate relationship had established itself, an undefined but real rapport, an inexplicable but undeniable communication, I have tried to portray in music a few of my strongest sensations and most lively impressions. >
