I’ve chosen a compilation album of the work of Elis Regina - The Essential (2003). For those of you unfamiliar, she is often referred to as the greatest Brazilian singer of all time. I think she just has an amazingly evocative and powerful singing style. Sadly she died in 1982 at the age of just 36 from a cocktail of drugs and alcohol - more than 100,000 people followed the funeral procession in Sao Paulo. She left behind a lengthy discography as she first started recording at age just 16. My favourite songs by her are Vento De Maio, track 11 & track 13, O Que Foi Feito Devera, with Milton Nasciemento. This is someone I have never knowingly heard of. I will give the album a play later today. Thanks Jules.

If you don't make it all the way through the album be sure to listen to tracks 11 + 13 ...

Quite liking this one, not sure it is something I would necessarily buy, but it is very chilled and she has a lovely voice.
It reminds me of the music they played in the bars when I went to Rio de Janeiro in the early 2000's.
5/10.

It reminds me of travelling and small bars with local singers. Absorbing at the time, but this is not hitting the button for me, sorry Jules. I'm glad you introduced me to someone unknown, though. It's good to listen to a broad spectrum of material outside of my usual listening. 5/10.

Sorry, Jules. 6/10 only. It sounds too much like "dinner" jazz to me, which is fine but not for mainstream listening.

Would probably need years to truly familiarize with this album. But it reminds of travelling as well and of just how good for the soul Brasilian music is. Realizing, for instance, that each group in most any given genre of Brasilian music is so unique that they can each spawn a genre of their own. Massively unique and heartfelt music that enhanced my existence on this earth for years.
Will listen to this album for a long time.
Track 'Aprendendo a Jogar' makes me feel great, its a well made concept with lots of fun moments. The slower ballads are hard to get into for me, which is true of any album for me, but sometimes over the years they begin to grow on me.
If you've any interest check out these two. There's a popular station down there called Jovem Pan. This first song was belted out over loud speakers in groups of people casting some of the most powerful memories of my life.
Just a good energetic that always got me going.
Doesn't surprise me that this live version of Reza Vela surpasses the studio version imo, an insane feat which for them I'm sure was as easy as breathing.

I did actually listen to this, but forgot to vote. I wasn't mad about it, but I'll give it another go as I've forgotten what I was going to score it.

I listened this morning via Tidal (best quality) , sounded fabulous and would be enjoyed no doubt by many... (here it comes ) ...but , just not my thing at all , I heard the first two tracks then before I knew it the album had ended . I am glad I don't work for a music publication and have to give stars for reviews , hmm 4/10 for what it gave to me .

Female vocal not a good start for moi. However it is a strong female vocal not a girlie, delicate young thing sound. Not quite my sort of music so considering that 5/10 must be at least faint praise Reminds me of arrangements Robert Palmer used
