Rather than continue to subvert the malt whisky thread I thought I'd better post this on its own. I made mention of Wimpy 'restaurants' and got to reminiscing with Jules and then I discovered this 1972 menu. I well remember the glory that was the Special Grill, and especially the "Bender" which is that circular Frankfurter with a grilled tomato in the centre. I'd forgotten about the Brown Derby though. I am now off to consider the merits of Vesta packet meals and the Heinz London Grill.

Yes I do remember them, and used to like the odd Wimpy before all the fast food chains took over. Co-incidentally, there is a Wimpy in Basingstoke which is tucked away in a corner of the mall. I really should try it one day just to reminisce.
While we're at it, does anyone remember Wendys with the square burgers?

Wendys used to be my favourite fast food outlet.

Wimpy bar in Beckenham - remember it well, I think it was conveniently situated near the pub. Apart from fish and chips I can't remember much available in the way of after-pub snackery in those days so it was quite a revelation, even if the food didn't look much like its picture.

My favourite 'restaurant' once upon a time before I became veggie
Classic was calling into the Richmond one on our way back home late night. One or two or three were consumed in one hit.
The bender and brown derby often caused amusement as alcohol had usually been consumed

It's funny how Wimpy became something of an iconic British brand ...
I was never taken there as a kid but I did go to Berni Inn a few times where I thought the strawberry sundaes in plastic tubs were amazing!!

Romford's got a Wimpy, prime position, top of the market place (they took it over from Subway)

Looking at the menu, the food looks as unappetising as was in reality, but the prices are fab!

We have a Wimpy here still and it was done up a year or so ago..
Forty years ago when I worked in the West End, a friend and I used to frequent the Wimpy in Marylebone High Street. Eggburger-n-chips followed by pancakes with maple syrup, cream and ice cream... Only something you could do in your early twenties and I feel I'm putting on a stone just thinking about it now....

You've just put me in mind of something else, Dave - The "cheese eggburger". There used to be a great little grill near London Bridge station, Southwark Bridge Road maybe, and after a bracing walk from a pub on the "wrong side" of the river, many of us partook of the heart-attack-in-a-bun that was the Cheese Eggburger. It was exactly what it sounds like, a cheeseburger with a fried egg on top. They were cooked in front of you and the egg-yolks were always wonderfully runny. Two of those really finished the night off before we all went our separate ways and to our individual homeward platforms. As you say though, Dave, when referring to Wimpeys...only in our twenties could we do those sorts of things.
