The SEG is better than the Caiman-II and much better than the Bushmaster.

I cannot compare with the Schitt range as I have not heard them. The SEG is certainly not bright, it just reproduces the natural energy of the music but tonally is the same as my Ayre player when I make direct comparisons. It likes having a granite coaster on top (available in sets from Morrisons and others). Remove the small rubber feet and stick stickyback felt to it. Great for damping cases. I use the larger placemats for the larger components.

The Bushmaster II had a somewhat brighter edge than the Caiman II has, and the SEG follows the tonality of the Caiman II with more of everything.
The only way you know whether the SEG can be bettered is to compare it to other ranges, I did this when I compared it to the Caiman II to the Audiolab MDAC and Rega DAC and Cambridge DAC all of which weren’t in the same league as the Caiman II, so would be even further off the SEG.
Additionally the Caiman II was a big upgrade on the internal DAC of my Naim NDX which I was not expecting. But then again the Cambridge CXC moved it on even further.

Just order any old placemats and coaster, there’s a lot to choose from on Amazon, I went for the cheapest I could find in Black.

Damping or removing casework really seems to improve the sound. I'm still quite surprised that so many manufacturers don't innovate a bit more in this respect, why do so many things have to come in a screwed or bolted thin metal case with a rattly top cover about 0.2mm thick? Plenty other materials and solutions out there and at least you'd differentiate yourself from the herd,

Speckly just won't sound as good as black though Chris BTW I was put off similar slate as apparently bits can come off and be a health hazard or somesuch. May not be 100% but same sort of price so granite (in black) best For cheapskates there are granite worktops being binned on Freecycle and other places and I reckon a brick would do the trick if you have the space !

Anything with a bit of weight to it's going to help, I should think. I use the brass nose-cone from a bomb on top of one of my Raspberry Pis!

I use RDC cones underneath my SEG and have a coaster on top, both make a good amount of improvement.
