Sorry. Not a reference to Neil Young. Wondered if anyone had treated an item to prevent rust. Got a vintage steering wheel on account that I liked the look of it, it was cheap, and I fancied restoring it. After a good clean, the leather and stiching came up practically unmarked. The spokes are steel (rusty) and painted aluminum. Was wondering if wiping with WD40 after stripping the paint off, would be enough to prevent further rust.

WD40 is a water dispersant so it should certainly help.

If know sweet FA about cars, but I do watch Wheeler Dealers. Ed Chyna applies a liquid that alters the chemical composition of rust so that it won't keep re-forming and come through any re-spray. I'm sure Halfords or the like will sell it. I'm guessing it's something like this stuff: www.amazon.com/Total-Solutions-Rust-Converter-Bottle/dp/B008Y0IXKM

In the past I've used something like Hammerite Rust Beater - you need something that will remove existing rust AND stop new rust. I doubt you'll ever get a good finish on your wheel though - it looks too far gone. Buy a new one !

Thanks. I'll see what happens with the WD40 first. Hoping it might end up something like this. Although this is an alloy version:

It's preventing it from returning. Actually, I've got 2! I got this wooden one at Christmas. And I have a nice one off a Caterham.

Coca Cola works a treat on rust. Tricky in this situation mind you!
Probably best sticking to Spicas suggestion - I've used that on cars and it seems to work ok. A good wire brush will be handy also.

Theres a few companies that make those leather bound Wheels for Lotus 7. I would not entertain that rusty one tbh.

I'll add this: A rust convertor/stabilizer does just that. It converts rust into a compound that is stable and inhibits any further rust. My item has surface rust, a good part I have now removed. A padded steering is not exactly a rare animal, Andr'e. You can get them for less than £50. As I said, I have one from a Caterham. The Lotus 7 didn't get a padded steering wheel until the Series 3, I think. Yes. I know you wouldn't touch it, Andr'e. And you seem to miss the point why I bought it. Forums. Don't you just love them!

No I hate forums.. Do you actually have a Lotus 7 or Caterham?
The car used in The Prisoner was a 1965 jobbie a Mk.2 [Wooden Wheel]

Well for someone who hates forums, you seem to pop-up on quite a few - or have done in the past.
I have neither a Lotus or Caterham. I'm collecting parts for a Series 2 Lotus replica. Chassis and interior, anyway. No a Locost, which is an approximation of a Seven.
Yes. It was a Series 2 Super Seven used in The Prisoner. More than one.
You don't have a Ford Escort MK2 back axle in your back garden, do you?

Didn't have me glasses at work this morning, so couldn't read what it was.
I'm just after the rear axle (engine would be handy) from an Escort. Not the whole car. And no, I don't have a Capri. Back axle is 5" too big for a Seven.

Still working on it. Slight detour. Anyone know if a clutch master cylinder can also function for brakes?

I guess it could but most brake systems are dual-circuit for redundancy and need a dual master cylinder.

Thanks. Yes. Doing a bit of Googling it seems a duel master cylinder for brakes will be required to be IVA compliant.
