I'm not a connoisseur of Mike Oldfield , I have Tubular Bells of course and have heard one or two after that , so the majority of his 20 odd albums are a mystery to me except this one. So there I was just starting my early retirement when my sister asked if I could look after her pets for 6 weeks while she and her husband visited friends in various parts of the world. Sister's house was an isolated villa in the hills of Andalucia , I took no music with me , evenings were spent outside on the patio looking down at twinkling lights of distant villages. There was a CD player and a handful of CD's I used to thumb through them and put them back not interested , one night I stuck this one on (I liked the cover ) , talk about an album hitting the spot , I played it nearly every night sipping wine and dreaming. The boss of Warner Records suggested to Mike to write an album based on Arthur C Clarke's book The Songs of Distant Earth , released in 1994 , the album is a melodic , new age vibe with a few sound clips . Clarke himself wrote a few words about his book in the cover and finished with : "Since the finale of the novel is a musical concert, I was delighted when Mike Oldfield told me that he wished to compose a suite inspired by it. I was particularly impressed by the music he wrote for The Killing Fields and now, having played the CD-ROM of The Songs of Distant Earth, I feel he has lived up to my expectations. Welcome back into space, Mike: there's still lots of room out here."

Nice choice Barry, I know and like Mike Oldfield, but I’m not familiar with this specific album, so looking forward to hearing it.

Thanks, Barry. The Songs of Distant Earth is one of the most poignant SF books ever, based on time dilation. A superb read.
I look forward to trying the music out later.

It's definitely a 'soundscape' album, which suits the novel well. There are touches of Mark Knopfler's composition style in there too, I think? There are also influences from Tubular Bells.
Thanks for sharing, Barry. I'll give this 7/10 but need to listen again.

Absolutely love this... having heard snippets of the album before it was released, I was fortunate enough to attend the World Premier at the London Planetarium where images and video was projected onto the roof whilst the album was played. Mike then mingled with the press afterwards and we were given a special film canister cased copy of the album. Its worth a small fortune these days, but my copy was sold years ago... but hey-ho. I've since purchased it on reissue vinyl and its one of the most played slabs of the black stuff I have... so 10/10 for me

This is actually one of the better Mike Oldfield albums. Bought it on CD after recommendation on another forum and now have the vinyl version released in 2015. I would give it 8/10. The original CD has enhanced content on it that worked with Apple Macintosh power PCs at the time of release.

From memory, this is some of the cdrom footage: I span my CD recently and forgot the warning on the reverse about track 1 of interactive material may "overload your speakers"... thankfully, I had the volume set low

Wow. What a story to go with this album choice That was amazing coincidence how you found it. I could almost see it all as I was reading.
Will listen soon, thanks.
