After reading about James Levine being investigated for historical sexual abuse earlier this month another big name in the world of classical music, Charles Dutoit, has now been suspended whilst allegations against him are investigated. Dutoit, the 81-year-old conductor and artistic director of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London, has been accused of sexual assault by four female musicians. DUTOITLEVINE

I've just been reading. Sad but perhaps inevitable as we now live in times of skeletons coming out of cupboards.
Dutoit is a conductor I've admired over the years for his music making, but have to admit this casts a pallor over his work.

This is very grim and depressing. I fear there are more to come ...

Directors, conductors, actors, it's becoming rather difficult to know whose work one is allowed to enjoy. It's a very odd situation but should someone's artistic history dictate whether their output is tainted by their personal history. I can't suddenly stop liking something I already enjoy because one facet of it is suddenly tainted. Should I throw all of my Dutoit and Levine recordings out and replace them with second-best examples? Difficult, isn't it. Should I never buy another recording by either conductor? By doing that I'm signalling my displeasure by refusing to add to his income, but at the same time I'm depriving anyone else associated with the recording of their livelihood.
How about X-Men movies? I enjoy the whole Marvel Universe thing, but Bryan Singer directed many of the films. Should I never watch my Blu-rays again, or take a hammer to them?
I wouldn't buy anything new by any of the miscreants, but I don't think I will stop listening to, or watching, the things already in my possession.
Please note that I omitted politicians from my list deliberately. Most of them are hated by most of us even before they commit a crime.

Gesualdo murdered his mrs but doesn't stop me enjoying some of the most profoundly beautiful choral music ever made.

Dutoit, in particular, has conducted some amazing recordings. I won't stop listening to them but I would give pause to buying anything else of his.

Funnily enough (or not) the final disc in Bryan Singer's X-Men series arrived this morning before I posted the above. I just hope that by storing it alongside all of the other Marvel Universe Blu-rays it doesn't exponentially increase the evil within and infect the surrounding Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, etc. discs.

You can be sure that I won't be picking up any Marvel infection now or ever!

You can be sure that I won't be picking up any Marvel infection now or ever! I never for a moment thought you would, Martin. You older people have a much more conservative viewing ideal. Us kids like the explosions, extreme suspension of disbelief, great 5:1 sound, explosions, 3D, did I mention the explosions?

The thing is - and I accept that there is no smoke without fire - he hasn't been found guilty of these accusations yet. I do find the jumping-on-bandwagon hurling of abuse by people with no knowledge of the events pretty damned distasteful, too.

It definitely is a case of "guilty until proven innocent" these days.
