Like most professions, there are good, bad, and indifferent examples, regardless of sex, race, religion or colour. I think Mariss is worried that he's only an "s" away from having a woman's name himself, or perhaps he keeps getting mistaken for Marin Alsop.

Marin Alsop was principal conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra for six years and I saw her on a number of occasions. I thought her interpretations of Brahms were some of the best I have ever experienced, Mahler maybe not so much, but I have heard a lot worse when it comes to Mahler. Gender should not even enter into it - crass beyond belief to be honest.

Indeed. You would have thought he would have the discretion to keep such views to himself ...
I wonder how much respect he has lost from all the women in the various top orchestras he works with!
