I don't like to Modify Vintage Equipment as a rule, however i dont mind the odd one if it does not deface the original Article. ie drilling additional holes etc.. Anyway i have a second Trio 'KA-4002' being my fav Trio amplifier. I thought id Re Build this one as well. Great amps, sound great. Well laid out but the wiring inside is like a rats nest.. Im still waiting on all the Components & wire to arrive so i thought id start on the Speaker outlet panel, get shut of the original flimsy outlets & fit binding posts.. [Originals] [new Ones] Next Job. Mains cable outlet..

I think it's perfectly fine to rebuild vintage gear with new components, after all I want to listen to it not put it in a glass case. I added 4mm binding posts to both a Rogers Cadet and Leak Stereo 20 I rebuilt yonks ago.

I was kinda on the lines of stupidy done like Drilling the Quad 'FM3' front panel & fitting an on/off switch Binding posts are fine on a Leak 'ST20' cos they are fixed to a seperate pair of boards like the Trio is & not the metal Chassis. Thats perfectly fine. I would not touch a 'Cadet' cos the original Output transformers can be troublesome.

The one thing I am desperate to do with my Philips power amp is to replace the hideous speaker terminals that need these flimsy things ... Not sure who could do it though!

J.A.Michell used to manufacture those in Gold or Rhodium, but the pin was shorter & thicker. They were also made so they could not pull out of the Sprung retainer of the original terminal..

You could blow on mine and they'll fall out! Hopeless.

Sounds like the springs are a bit weak on the original terminal. Heres the Michells, can you see they have more for to grab onto AdaptorsGive em a ring Knowing Michell they should still have some

Yes that's a possibility thanks ... Would really like to replace the terminals with something heavy duty though.

They however are not springs in the Philips amp but awkward screwdown terminals. I ditched those pin things and instead use 4mm sockets with an inch of wire which I then screw into the terminals. It's not a perfect solution but works better.

With Jules showing me those adaptor posts i asumed they were the sprung press down type terminals. Now ive seen a picture i know what type they are. You might be able to remove them

Do they screw off completely? If so could you not fit something like this for you thick cable, Fit them over the original threaded stud & screw them back on. Eyelet Terminal

I would not touch a 'Cadet' cos the original Output transformers can be troublesome. I know what you mean, but I was careful. The original screw terminals were useless for decent speaker cable. That Cadet couldn't half pump out some volume despite its tiny power rating (8Wpc if I remember correctly).

Thanks chaps - I will have to take a closer look at them once I can drum up the courage to disturb the connections!

Thanks chaps - I will have to take a closer look at them once I can drum up the courage to disturb the connections! Regarding the Eyelet terminals, they ideally need a flat side so they dont foul on the back of the terminal pod.
