Big Issue lately about the amount of food waste in the UK! I think something needs to be done about the misconception of the 'Best Before' Quote because i believe people feel compelled to throw away food when it reaches the stated date. It needs to be clarified.
However i can pop down & get fresh veg stick it in the kitchen Veg basket for weeks on end & it will be fine. I go buy pre packaged Veg it will be bad before i know it. Whats going off there?
I never waste food but i do have a rule about Eggs.
A large percentage of our income goes on food, You cannot waste things..

This is largely the fault of the supermarkets who want to shift stock.

Well all our little shops closed down because of the Greedy supermarket. Again the general public are to blame because they are so idle they want to buy everything as quick as possible under one roof. Bulk stock also makes it cheaper than small private store..

You asked why the food goes off so quickly in the supermarket packaged stuff. Couple of points sprang to mind : 1 just think about the length of time that veg runs through a supermarkets supply chain. Must be 4-5 days at least before it gets to the point of sale leaving you next to nothing on the date code. 2: packaging. There's gases that are used in packaging in order to help produce stay fresh - salads a good example - and that cant be good. We also never waste food(can't afford to) so careful buying on a 2/3 day cycle seems to work for us. Still not got it quite right though!

Was a sad day when the old bloke in the farm house down our street passed away. He had a few dozen Chicken in his back yard. Perfect free range eggs they were, I used to get my spuds & tormatoes off him to. I once pulled him up about how too cheap his things were.

I'd be happy to see a hard and fast rule for all food products. Opened a tub of margarine yesterday and it had a date 09:12:17 but no indication of whether that's a sell-by, use-by, or best-before. I normally ignore the dates anyway, except in Sainsburys last week I saw some lamb steaks which were 3 days past the use-by date and thought I'd best leave those alone !

Our local shop also closed this year, but can't blame the supermarkets, it's the people as you say who want to do one-stop shopping.

Remember the old 1960's Norman Wisdom comedy 'Early Bird' [The Milk round]. The big Consolidated dairies trying to close the Grimsdales family business down.
Bigger & Cheaper

I eat things the boss bought that I don't like that much before they go off. Good news is that I have discovered grub I now thought I didn't like to be quite good. Looking but avoiding that cabbage I keep seeing though, maybe tonight. Most people seem to think it's ok to throw food away. I see it as a crime against humanity, the planet and sense. Having 6 dogs means little goes to waste anyway.
Take the waste out of the whole of the food chain and prices and 'usage' will plummet.

Portion control required. One reason my weight has dropped a couple of stone is I now cook and cook less ! Shortly to make lunch, including courgettes and red onions. Both items discovered from a 'use up' of old produce. Must have a look and see if there is other stuff I can manage. As a vegetarian I need to stop avoiding most veg !

Portion Control. If i made here a volcano on the plate or a spoonful she would still leave some.

Cabbage : boil for a shorter time than you'd think. Drain off. Chop some bacon and fry that in the pot you've just used. Add your cabbage back in with a wee bit butter and season. Delicious. Also works well with red apple Worth making your own coleslaw as well.

Could be why I dislike cabbage so much.Think school dinners and growing up in the 50s and 60s
I'd put in in the steamer. How long ? I give broccoli 7 minutes
Found some fakin bacon recently, could use that

Shorter than you think Mike - the problem with cabbage is it gets mushy. Just steam it a bit then try it as you go. Wee bit crunch is what you're after. Try different ones as well! Savoys best for coleslaw
