I was looking a some old pre war Photos of building around where i grew up.. Most the old building are still there but the Ornate Iron railings were all removed during the war apart from the posh peoples houses .. Utter sacrilege it was removing them totally wiped away part of what made those victorian buildings so nice.

One of the very few factories that still makes them is about 20 miles from me. They keep the patterns and it's now a father to son job.

Anything that was made of metal, especially if it was deemed purely decorative, was melted down to make everything from shell-casings to ships for the war effort...unless you were posh, in which case it became part of our national heritage and needed to be protected of course.
Times change but attitudes remain the same sadly.

Interesting it's a Carnegie library. There's a fuss going on in the Central Library in Edinburgh just now about a hotel being built next to it that would block light and that's a Carnegie library also.
Big change in those pics.

What a lovely building that was! There must have been a great pride about it. Kids need to be taught an appreciation of our history and culture. If it doesn't come from home they will likely miss out.

There was a documentary some years ago that showed it to be all a lie. The metal from these railings was not suitable for much. But once the process of taking away those metal ornaments started, nobody dared to stop it.

I understood that, rather than being officially removed for the war effort, most of it was taken away under the dead of night (easy in a blackout) by chancers looking to weigh it in, due to the inflated price of scrap.

I remember the cables for trolley buses being up in London for some years after they stopped running them.
