I've ordered a pair of custom made wooden stands for my Tannoys which should be arriving next week some time.
The central column is fillable and am wondering what to fill it with.
I would be interested to know what your experiences might be with this.
Perhaps the best thing to start with would be something high mass. I found a seller on ebay selling 10kg of steel carbon pellets for £25. No idea if this is a good price though!

I'm persuaded to 'float' speakers now so a keen user of the wobbly Townshend stands.
Could there be a way to float the Tannoys ?

Sand is cheap and dead. Just dry it out first.

Is there an audiophile brand? Yes I was looking at that - I presume you mean the wooden pellet stuff?

If you want it really heavy, you can use lead shot. I bought yacht keel lead cheap from a marine yard, 60kg of it for my speakers.

That's a clever idea!

Sand is cheap and dead. Just dry it out first. Also put it in polythene bags unless you're 100% sure that: a. your stands won't leak the sand all over your floor b. you're not going to want to remove it at some future time

hmm - the stands are going to be pretty heavy in their own right - how important is adding extra weight?

Depends on the bass potency you're looking for.

Yes, watch out with builders sand, because when it's stored outside it is often used by cats as....well let's just say they use it instead of cat litter too.
Lead shot is good but you can overdo it. I found where nearly full with sand was good, about 2/3rd with lead was better. Anymore lead was worse.
Don't use wood pellets if there is any chance they might ever get damp, even a little from humidity - they will swell and then they will crumble to pieces. Lots of very small pieces.

I've previously used Atacama Atabytes , but it does run expensive if you want to fill your stands to the top.

Ive have only ever loaded Stand to kill any metal ringing, not for weight. 3/4 full is ample. £4 for 10Kg for the ELC sand is well cheap.
However going back to the opening post, I have never encountered fillable wooden stand! However being wood it has to be a totally dry fill, as a safeguard I would put a thin bag inside the stand column , pour the fill gradually into the bags.

Last time I filled stands, I put the ballast into 5 or 6 seal-able poly bags per stand and weighed out equal amounts into each bag.

I had to fabricate a bit of waste pipe to fill my speaker compartments. Having a front plate is all very well, but it doesn't make filling it easy when you absolutely cannot put the speaker on its back.

Thanks for all the input guys ... Sand is the cheapest option so maybe I will start there first. I might add some kitty litter for an exotic mix ...
