Does anyone have any experience of the Tannoy ST-100 or ST-200 supertweeters?
I am wondering if they would be a worthwhile addition to my Chatsworths with 12" HPD's ...

I believe they come in at 9 - 9kHz, so not really super-tweeters at all. They may well help to smooth a larger DC driver though, so beneficial in some cases.

I'm fairly sure @docstewart was running a pair when I visited him in the weekend.

I'm fairly sure @docstewart was running a pair when I visited him in the weekend. Yes MartinT is right, I use the ST100s with my MGs. You can set the crossover frequency to 18, 20 or 22Khz and sensitivity in five steps between 87 and 95dB. I have mine set to 22kHz and 91dB. Not only do they give more "Air" to the sound and presentation, they smooth the bass response too, due to the intermodulation between the ultra sonic and audible signals. These intermodulation products also provide a greater sense of realism, especially with well made, simply mic'ed live recordings. Well worth a listen with the other DC Tannoys In my opinion.

Thanks Doc, I'm intrigued - a couple of questions if I may ...
Do you find the best settings by trial and error or do they tell you what to dial in?
Also, I'd be interested to know how you connect them ... cheers.

Thanks Doc, I'm intrigued - a couple of questions if I may ... Do you find the best settings by trial and error or do they tell you what to dial in? Also, I'd be interested to know how you connect them ... cheers. Hi Jules, To start with the last bit first, before I changed the crossovers for the "Mainly Tannoy" Clarity Cap ones, I changed the spring clips on the MG crossovers for 4mm binding posts. These allowed for a second plug to be inserted at right angles and I pluged the S/T lead into these sockets. There is a filter network in the Tannoy super tweeters so no need of any change to the crossover. when going to the new crossovers I went bi wire as the crossovers are set up to do this. I got Speedy Steve of Magna Audio to make me some ply plates with a lip so they could seal into the aperture where to old connectors had been, with four gold plated copper terminals. The super tweeters now piggy back on the HF terminals. As for setting the levels, the standard way I have always set up super tweeters over the last 40 plus years is to set the crossover point low and the gain high enough for them to be obvious, then raise the crossover point and reduce the gain, until they disappear. Then I reverse the procedure ie. Highest frequency/lowest gain reduce the crossover point and increase gain 'til they become noticeable. The point of "disappearance" should be the same in both directions and the level where they are just below being obvious should work well. With the Tannoy units, with the pre sets, this is a doddle to do, took me about 30 minutes. Hope this helps Doc

So not exactly plug and play then Doc? It might be a bit too much of a headache for my skillset but will see what prices the units go for ...

Jules, they are a very easy set up, I'm in Petersham in Richmond so not that far away from you, if you get them I would be happy to come over and help set them up. Cheers
