I will probably regret this! They don't come up very often and this one is ready to go,having less than 30 hrs on it since being sent to John Wright to be checked, rebuilt and an extended fine line stylus fitted. if you know decca's then this model is a corker! just google 'decca c4e' only reason for sale is ive just got a cadenza black and simply don't need 2 high end cartridges. £610 including recorded delivery.i may be interested in a swap for a decent sut so what have you got??

What a shame. You know a Decca VTA adjustment is opposite of everyone else. To mellow it a bit you lift the arm slightly... The high frequencies you've commented on could well be an overloading phono stage as apparently, these things can 'snap' many tens of millivolts on ticks and plops and many solid state phono stages don't like this at all and can ring/oscillate briefly - a 'Crofty-style' valve phono stage makes good sense here as this type of cartridge was recommended for use with them I remember.
Good luck with the sale, but I admit you use any Decca on ITS terms, never yours....

cheers dave,i use it through a nakamichi ca-5 pre amp. now if it had the clarity and detail of the cadenza black couple with the decca puch and drive it would make one hell of a cartridge! i did wonder if it was over loading but the doc who has heard the nakamichi seemed to think it would be fine

Ooo
If I didnt have so many warped records, and such a big budget over-run this year, and could be bothered with the faff of changing cartridges or multiple decks...
I have a Dave Brubeck record crying out for this. Still - I do have lots of warped records so will have to lust from afar
DSJR - where did your comment come from? Is there another hidden post between yours and the OP's or have I been inhaling the wrong substances. Where did the high frequencies and overloading phono-stage come from?

Decca's is where it comes from... This sample has been much discussed all over, so apologies if I'm either typing out of turn or confusing. Maybe I'm spoiled, as my Microscanner just works... Many Deccas are cussed things and owners of this and related solid-bodied models need extra preparation, I don't know.
Jamie, I'm thirty years older now, but I remember the CA7 preamp I had was a total joy to behold. Beautifully made inside and out and with decent components, but flat as the proverbial pancake sonically. I replaced it with an ARC SP14 and the phono stage with the Decca was absolutely sublime, the FET-based line stage really good too I remember. I never felt comfortable with the 'club' that owning this kind of gear almost makes you join and the SP14 became a Croft 4PP after a couple of years. Looking back, not sure that was the best decision I ever made, but if an SP14 can be obtained boxed and in good order for a grand or less, I'd seriously consider it - CA7's now fetch silly money and it's such a shame the superb build and engineering wasn't fully realised in sonic performance - the PA7 power amp in both versions is a different thing given a couple of hours to warm up though...
Please forgive the thread drift. I LOVE Deccas and am well aware how close they can be in tracking a good master tape faithfully, the 'sweetness' so often heard from vinyl being more a colouration effect than reality in the source. I'm going to say again that *some* MC types seemed to add a false 'halo' over the sound and it's this addictive 'halo' that endears so many enthusiasts to the vinyl source. I haven't heard the Cadenza Black, so if this one enables you to play record after record with no issues, then that's the way to go.
I do hope someone gives this an enthusiastic home and can live with it. Maybe the old Decca International tonearm with it's added warmth, may tame it down a bit on iffy records?

I reckon this cartridge would be rather tasty in julesd68 's Kuzma arm on The Source. Jules, you would love the way a good Decca sounds!

I'm sure it would be lovely Chris, looks very interesting indeed but I'm actually enjoying having a settled system at the moment!

The decision to move my Mk4 Decca on was the hardest hifi related choice I have ever had to make. I still miss the things it could do but it just wasn't compatible with the amount of dust we have in this old house. One day I shall own another one!

Joking aside, before I even *think* of any more major purchases I have several bits of gear to sell first! And I've been enjoying buying vinyl ...

High mass arms MUST have some lateral damping on them, as later Deccas with 1.6g tracking (approx.) are inclined to 'shimmy' laterally when disturbed if the arm is too massive. The Rega R200 arm wasn't really suitable and I had to treat this combination with utmost care to prevent another failure. Notts. Analogue arms don't have fluid damping, but they have 'stabilisers' around the Uni-Pivot which help no end...
Maybe a Nima arm might be worth a look one day, but prices are very high. The ubiquitous Jelco 750 may well be excellent, but I'd suggest an Ammonite pillar base...
