Pete isn't a member here but we thought we'd post details of our session at his place, listening to his fascinating cinema-based system. Perhaps we can persuade him to join us, too? Pete's enormous Western Electric copy stereo horn cinema speaker, stood on two PA-style bass bins on their sides. Speedy Steve (who is tall) standing next to it for scale. Ribbon tweeters seen standing on the bass bins. One compression driver feeding the left horn. Power amp for the main horns. Power amp for the ribbon tweeters. Sony solid state amp driving the bass bins. The system is listened to as a near-field speaker due to the small size of the room. Stereo image is completely different with strong mono positioning and the tweeters providing some sense of space and air. It's not what most of us would call a stereo image at all. The sense of effortlessness is strong and most voice (male and female) are rendered with palpable detail. We hit a snag with Hope Sondoval, though, who just sounded swimmy and boomy. Otherwise delivery seemed very even no matter where we were in the room, a feature of good horn systems. I thought the sound from vinyl (a rather nice Voyd deck with Alphason arm and strain gauge cartridge) outperformed Pete's Najda DAC and Tidal, although most of the digital material sounded very good. I learned once again that there are many ways to skin a cat and this take on sound reproduction couldn't have been further from my system, yet I learned things from several familiar songs being played. We finished the day with an absolutely top class curry in Hatfield, one of the best I've had in decades. Thank you, Pete.

The delicacy and detail of the mid range was something.. The longer you listened the more they grow on you. It's the third time I've heard them in sightly different configurations.. I would love to hear two the W.E. horns well apart in a huge vaulted room / hall with other channels and acoustics to match. The potential is enormous.. That curry spread was mega! My pics were almost identical to Martin's Close up of the power supply for one of the drivers electromagnet and Raal ribbon tweeter. Must add that Pete's cottage has incredibly narrow and steep (suicide) stairs leading up to the room. Pete recounted that having bought the horns and whilst they were being made in Korea, he began to realize they wouldn't fit up the stairs full stop. The delivery crate arrived and it was enormous. The solution was to cut a suitably sized 'large' hole in the floor (conveniently above the garage), remove a joist, lift the 200 kgs unit up, and then make good the floor etc! Only then could he begin to accommodate them physically / acoustically and audition. True dedication! Must also add that the Voyd etc is playing into Najda's analogue input where is ADC'd and then the rest DSP / X/O's / DACs etc is the same as for file or Tidal.. The Strain guage cart is good, but I think the IO limited cart Pete has, (sadly not available on the day, due to phono amp problems), is even better.. IO ltd, POA

He cut a hole in the floor! What if, after all that effort, he decided he didn't like them? Yoiks!
I take it he's not planning on moving any time soon.

I take it he's not planning on moving any time soon. I asked him that question and his reply was an emphatic 'no'!

Our host, Pete, standing by his Voyd Reference turntable (sorry, no close ups) with Speedysteve and Martin seated. As you can see from the room dimensions, it was a true near field listening experience! A very enjoyable day, capped with an awesome curry in Hatfield (menu choices by Pete - a regular customer!). fullsizeoutput_ab9 by Steve Coward, on Flickr

Am I evil for laughing out loud as soon as I saw the bubble-wrap and parcel tape mod?

Am I evil for laughing out loud as soon as I saw the bubble-wrap and parcel tape mod? Yes, but we did, too! We also laughed at the alligator clips connecting up the tweeters and wondered if they were directional.

I hope you told Pete that crocodile clips sound better than alligator clips

Haha, nice photos! I must tidy up!
Thanks for coming up, it was really great to have you guys over, really enjoyed chatting and playing tunes all afternoon.
Yes, it’s true, I did have to dismantle parts of the house t get it in the room. D’oh!
Thanks for the nice comments, for sure 16A is quite idiosyncratic in its presentation, it’s been a long and sometimes frustrating journey to try and tame it. If you like stereo imaging and pin point instrument placement, then it’s definitely not for you! It strengths are really dynamics and midrange resolution, the downsides being significant clouration due to the sheet metal construction. It’s certainly proven tricky to get it to sound even. I still feel that there’s more to come before it realises it’s true potential, but getting at it is hard and continues to be a work in progress.

It's been fascinating playing some of the same songs we heard yesterday, Pete. Your speaker gives such a different presentation and different insight that I find myself listening differently, if you see what I mean. A really great lesson in how music is perceived.
Well done for seeing it through and having a highly unique system!

Hi Martin, I do indeed know what you mean, I think different folks have different perspectives and look for different things. It seems the more involved you get in tech hobby, the more ‘personalised’ the systems become.
I’m definitely less militant about what I consider good HiFi these days!

It turns out I don't have Ry Cooder's Paradise and Lunch on vinyl, which is a shame. However, playing it on Spotify is very interesting. I'll play you all this song when you come over next year.
