Just made a couple of these - braced wooden frame, 50mm rockwool, calico fabric with small air space built in. Going to do some more.

Where did you get the design from, and what frequencies are they aimed at ?
I have need of some bass traps but I can't find any ready-made that will fit into my room layout.
Any chance of you posting a photo ?

Just made it up based on the size of rockwool panels. Approx 4' x 2' Rockwool is meant to have very good sound absorbing properties but you would probably go for thicker (eg 100mm) for bass traps. These are intended to tame mid and high frequency reflections from the rear of the dipole electrostatic (which would normally sit about a foot higher).

Very unobtrusive, I like them a lot

Helps that the walls are painted with Dulux 'natural calico'

Yes their bass traps are about the closest to what I need (namely tall thin as I can't fit them into the corners) I haven't managed to trawl through all their information yet so I'm not sure how effective they'd be at 50-100 Hz They're not expensive as these things go but a bit of a gamble as I'm not going to know if they work until I've installed them. (and of course they have to pass the WAF)

They look great! My acoustic foam blocks are stuck directly to the wall and are a much more obtrusive purple. Still, they have turned an un-listenable room into an Ok one.

(and of course they have to pass the WAF) I met one of the guys from GIK at the Stylus Vinyl show in Manchester earlier in the year. Extremely knowledgeable and friendly, I would just give them a call to discuss ... I thought some of the designs looked fantastic too ... Certainly on my shortlist of 'upgrades' ...

There's a scale of sound absorption properties for various materials somewhere - can't recall what it is named. eg I think 50mm rockwool is pretty much 100% absorbtion over 500Hz and drops off below. Seem to remember about 70% at 250Hz but just 25% at 125Hz and so on. One thing to remember is not to pack it tightly - this reduces its effect.

The centre panel in this photo is a GIK, it's just as good quality as the PicturePanels either side of it and half the price.

www.acoustic.ua/st/web_absorption_data_eng.pdfHere is a useful table of absorption coefficients, But if you want performance below 125 you need active bass traps, i mean membrane resonators limp-mass absorption or helmholtz resonators. There is a company called Acoustic Fields that makes real bass traps that perform below 125 Hz, their technology is based on activated carbon and diaphragmatic absorption.

Thanks for that. I have an Acoustic Sciences SubTrap, originally made for the REL Studio II subwoofer I used to own. I still have it in the corner of my room.
