Hi all, Just registered, so here goes a liitle bit about me.
My first experience of music was pre school listening to an old valve radiogram with a Garrard autochanger. My love of music developed into an interest in electronics, the last 20 years I have worked as an embedded software engineer on both automotive and domestic radio products. My music tastes are quite varied and definitely starting to show my age. My music collection is approx 50/50 between vinyl and CD. I still enjoy dabbling with DIY electronics just struggle to find time.
Anyway I shall enjoy reading and hopefully contributing and the alias is a reference to Babylon5.

Hi and welcome to The Audio Standard. It's great that you found us! What does your system consist of? It sounds like you may have some home made gear there.

Welcome from me, too!
The radiogram with Garrard is a memory I think a few of us have. The trail from there can be long and meandering.

Hi, For vinyl I am using an early Linn Sondek Lp12 as far as can tell 1976 ish from the motor. A Valhalla power supply is fitted but I am sure this was an update. I have just swapped out the original spot welded subchasis. No suprises it had distorted. I found a perfect later issue one that was bonded on the auction site. At the same time I installed new springs and bushes and replaced the drive belt. The tonearm is an Alphason Delta fitted with K9 cartridge. My initial impression is the updates I made have restored the Linn to where it should be. I have just installed AT95 Paratrace Stylus on the K9. In theory this should be better than The original K9 stylus the suspension on the stylus is still bedding in but my initial impression is very favourable.
For CD I have a Cambridge Audio Discmagic transport combined with an Audiolab M-DAC. The DAC has a clock out setting compatible with the transport so the DAD is the master clock source.
For amplification I am running an old NAD 3020A, still sounds great and the Phono stage has a good reputation for good reasons. This amp responds very well to Schotkky diodes in the power supply.
For speakers I am using KEF Celeste 3's but modified with a Scanspeak D2010 series tweeter. Intimately more capable than the stock Audax units.
Finally most of my serious listening is done through headphones. I use a pair of AKG K550.
DIY at the moment is mostly mods to existing designs. However I am in the process of building an amplifier using the NCC200 amplifier with bare PCB's from Avondale Audio. Longer term I want to build a suitable partnering pre-amp and after that a dedicated headphone amplifier.
My other project is restoring to original performance a Pink Triangle PT1, couldn't be more different to the Linn.

Surprising I know I also always assumed all the classic KEF drivers were in house until I bought the Celeste 3 speakers. Definitely the Audax HD100D25 hidden by the fact they were usually under the fixed fabric wrap of the cabinet and if you took the fabric cover away the domes are protected by a metal mesh grill that was an add on. The Coda 2 speakers used the small magnet version looking on the web just now, in this case more obvious as not always covered and no protective mesh grill. As far as I know KEF always used one of their Melinex domes with the Bextrene coned speakers either the T15 but mostly the T27 and the T52 in their top level systems. The T27 was later superseded by the T33A as used in the R103.2. I suspect KEF used the Audax units because they were more efficient and a better match for the efficiency of the doped paper cone drivers and were readily available. l don't think the Audax was a match for the T27, but then they were in the lower spec systems. These days my current favourite tweeter is the Hiquaphon OW1 very detailed but sweet with it. I have a lot of respect for the older KEF speakers.

We're currently asking members to participate in the next round of Album Choice, which runs fortnightly, so if you're interested in joining in and to sharing some discussion about an album of your choice, that would be great. If you feel like joining in, either let me know by PM or via the Album Choice discussion thread here.
