I regularly drive up the M1 and M6 to see my mum in Manchester. For years now the journey has been blighted by these infernal 50mph zones which seem to last forever. There's always lorries driving on my bumper at that speed wanting to go faster. I hate it. So interesting to see today they are proposing an increase to the speed limit in these areas to let cars overtake lorries, spreading the traffic out. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-41704392This article also explains the lorries issue - it says most of them have speed limiters set to 56mph and don't want to slow down. Of course the bigger question is why does it take us so long in this country to get these roadworks finished in the first place??

The question is why aren't these lorry drivers being prosecuted? Unfortunately they may be just on the 10% plus 1 mph rule for speeding but I know that is not universal in all police force areas and you get done for being that extra 1mph over.

Lack of funding - where countries have toll motorways, the works seems to get done faster.
In a 50 limit, you're safe to do 56 as speedos over-read and there is a tolerance before cameras kick in.

you get done for being that extra 1mph over. You won't get prosucuted anywhere in England or Wales for being 1mph over the speed limit and if any one tells you they have been, they're either being economical with the truth to avoid telling you how fast they were going, or their speedometer is faulty

I can't see how raising the roadworks limit to 60 will make the slightest difference. Presumably the lorries also will be doing that extra 10 mph ? I don't fully believe the notion that they all carry working speed limiters (maybe the artics, but not the others) I tend to trust my satnav for a more accurate indication of my real speed, not my speedometer, which I know is at least 5mph out at motorway speeds.
...and while we're on the actual subject...
Last Saturday on our way north we found that about 30 miles of the A1 was completely closed, with a detour of many miles adding at least an hour to our journey. There were only a few very ambiguous signs warning of this. This was only a week or so after the Highways announcement that all the road works in that area were now finished !

I tend to trust my satnav for a more accurate indication of my real speed, not my speedometer Yes, but if you calibrate your speedo from satnav then you have a differential error at a set speed. Now that I've done that, I can set my cruise control to 58 with impunity. That does not mean that anyone else can!

I used to check my speedometer on an official 'measured mile' - that's how I know it's about 5mph out at 60mph. Measured Miles seem however to be getting fewer each year. You can measure against motorway markers I think and do the km/mile conversion.

At a reading of 54 on the speedo my satnav says I'm doing exactly 50. So with an offset of 4, then add another 4 as being less than 10% over, I run my cruise control at 58 and am doing a real 54.

Not very scientific but I guess I'm doing 50mph during the roadworks section as most other people are doing the same speed!

Most people use their speedos and are doing a real 46-48!

Yes, they're usually spot on. GPS relies on atomic clocks and is mega accurate.
