I am presently doing some interviews for a local radio station - they are in the order of 5 to 8 minutes long and the subject matter is that I choose a song and talk about it, the singer, lyrics, the album, musical aspects - I just have to keep it interesting. I also promote the vinyl revival. (I am allowed to promote my business for a minute or two). The station is aimed at people in their forties. So far there has been:
Sixto Rodriguez - Crucify your Mind; Katie Melua - Secret Symphony; Pat Suzuki - How High the Moon; Emmy the Great - North; Shivaree - Goodnight Moon.
The first track was an example of protest lyrics and I could quote something like: 'Don't try to impress me with your manner of dress, A monkey in silk is a monkey no less.' The last track was an example in chatting about the film music of Quentin Tarantino. I have one or two more up my sleeve, but my question to the forum is this: do you know any great tracks that have an interesting story to them? We live in a world of a rather short attention span so I don't have a long time to develop ideas. Any suggestions?

What about John Lennons Gimme Some Truth? Another protest song relating to all the tripe we hear from the media. Strikes me as utterly timeless as the song was released in 1971 and remains a real sign of a lack of political change in those 42 years. I love this track. www.beatlesbible.com/people/john-lennon/songs/gimme-some-truth/

Deep Purple's Smoke on the Water has an interesting story, having been composed after a part of their hotel caught fire.

'Ode to Billy Joe' by Bobby Gentry. It's a fantastically vivid example of songwriting - take the part where the family are discussing someone's death in between mouthfuls of food:
Most interestingly, you never get to find out the full story, so you are left to play it out in you mind - through several different endings. Very clever.

How about 'My own eyes' by Xavier Rudd. He is a modern protest singer with Green leanings. The song is all about the destruction caused by greed and politics.

Tank Park Salute - Billy Bragg , the title is an enigma, it as simple lyrical genius and there are so very few songs about the death of your father , which for a vinyl loving man in his 40's will be pertinent .

Gee thanks guys! Keep 'em comin. I have to say I like good lyrics - 'The Night Before Larry was Stretched' (Elvis Costello) is on a par with 'Ode to Billy Joe'.

Oh my giddy aunt! Just had phone catch-up with my brother in Auckland. I tell him about my radio interviews and ask if he has any suggestions for a Song and a Story. He comes back with ... wait for it ... 'Two Little Boys' by Rolf Harris. rofl.

Hayseed Dixie do an excellent cover of Greendays "Holiday" which to me sounds much more like it should. It could be an interesting one as it shows how one bands music and lyrics can be transformed entirely by another. Dig them both out, have a listen and you may well agree.

I will look it up thanks. Singers covering others work is a worthwhile 'Topic'. Often it is a vast improvement, sometimes just different, and sometimes disappointing. It would make a good thread in itself. Here's a few: Original Hurt by Johnny Cash - now done by Leona Lewis. Stunning. Original Lovesong by The Cure - much more intimately done by Adele. The Girl from Ipanema by Stan Getz - interesting but not better take by Amy Winehouse Crying by Roy Orbison - copied by Don McLean. I prefer Orbisons voice, but prefer Don McLeans backing.

Hurt was originally aNine Inch Nails tune. Best J Cash cover is One(U2) and Mary J Blige covers it well also. The Cash video to Hurt is heartbreaking - he truly, truly loved his wife and could not believe he outlived her even after all his bad behaviour. After you've seen this LL cannot get near the emotion involved. Could bring a tear to a glass eye that vid and head and shoulders above Nine Inch Nails version.
Another excellent cover is Luther Wright and the Wrongs doing comfortably numb or Urge Overkills version of Girl you'll be a woman soon.
Hopefully you enjoy these.

The Scissor Sisters do an 'interesting' version of Comfortably Numb. Agreed about Cash and Hurt.
I find Adele unlistenable.
