I like both Spotify and Youtube for discovering music. Youtube can be great for seeing live videos. Whilst Spotify interface is really good, espically spotify connect. Sound quality can very but I have a preference on my system when both have been well recorded Here are the same tracks from the Dave Mackay Group to highlight the differences.

That's interesting, John, as the current build of Volumio has both Spotify Connect and YouTube plug-ins. I will therefore be able to compare these directly on my system. I will come back with my notes.

Ok, there's a very big level difference between them, the YouTube version being 10dB higher on my volume control. It could mean it's more compressed.
The Spotify sounds better presented in the opening section. I like the way the bass stops on a sixpence. Drum impact is good. Soundstage is spacious.
In the YouTube version, I don't like the way the tinkly cymbals or whatever they are sound so artificial. There's just a bit more shape in the Spotify version.
The bass has more depth and impact in the Spotify version.
I think it would be easy to be swayed by the YouTube's high level and compression but I sense that the Spotify is handling the song's dynamics better until things get very busy. Neither of them do fuzz effect very well.

Really inmteresting I wonder why with mine I get more detail the other way around Agree sounds better via bandcamp download for me another reason why I prefer file based I usually have to turn volume and bass up on Spotify to get somewhere similar to my file based system but still sounds a bit messy in comparision

The version of Spotify, Spotify Connect plug-in and Volumio probably all have an effect, not to mention connection format, in my case S/PDIF.

I suspect that Spotify is better optimised in the Pi and youtube better optimised in windows for sound.

Worth having a listen to Tidal as well. I find it excellent with good sound quality.
