This is one of those whiny self-pitying " Why does this stuff only seem to happen to me?" threads, so feel free to ignore it. I live alone and I have to let it out somewhere. Bought a new TV, as mentioned elsewhere. Absolutely fine, and I got all sorts of discounts. Last Thursday I checked my email before bed and there was a message from eBay, telling me that my " refund" was being processed. Huh? Yes, eBay were, as they said, processing a refund, for my new telly, so my instant reaction was to change my passwords at eBay, PayPal, and my bank. I emailed eBay and explained that I had not requested a refund, they had not paid me any money, I did not want them to pay me any money. I never heard back from them. I also emailed the vendor straight away to explain the same thing, didn't ask for it, ain't got it, don't want it. Next morning there was an email waiting for me from " Josh" a contract at the company I purchased the TV from. Josh kindly told me that he'd checked his records and could see that the TV had been returned, and my refund had been processed, and that he " hoped that helped". I emailed Josh. Josh emailed back to say he'd looked into things and it turned out that they'd sent me two TVs by mistake, and when they put the other one back into inventory it triggered the refund, could I please send them the £589.00 back when I received it. I emailed Josh. Josh emailed me back and agreed that as I'd scored 5% off via an eBay deal, I didn't need to pay that back either, so could I please send them £559.55 I emailed Josh Josh emailed me back, and told me that the £50 voucher I'd used from Nectar points would be refunded to my Nectar account automatically. I emailed Josh Josh emailed me back, telling me he'd " looked into it" and I was correct in my assertion that the Nectar points would not be returned to me. Could I please send them £509.55 I emailed Josh. Josh agreed that as eBay had subtracted the 1500 Nectar points I got for the sale (they were running a 5X deal at the time) due to the refund I was still £7.50 out of pocket. Could I please return them £502.05. I've just returned that sum. Just for fun part way through the transaction I had to verify myself to the bank via their app. Well, I've just bought a new phone, haven't I? Guess whose " device" wasn't recognised. I had to update my details, jump through a couple of hoops, and contend with a phone call that didn't recognise my voice when I was asked to repeat a code. I ended up punching the code in, almost literally. Anyway, it's finally all sorted, 4 days later. Last night I purchased a new A/V amp. I checked my email before bed and there was a message from eBay, telling me that my " refund" was being processed. WTAF? Again? eBay proceeded to tell me that " Unfortunately, the seller had to cancel your order due to the following reason: Something was wrong with the buyer's delivery address". The vendor, meanwhile had messaged me to say that " I had to cancel this order as there was an error in eBay fees. I have re-listed and you will be able to repurchase once the original payment is refunded. Apologies for this inconvenience. Kind regards."I bought it for a second time before I went to bed, after verifying that the refund was definitely on its way. I wonder what the third thing will be.

I think I may have the most times in this thread bitching about the same topic. If there's any sort of reward or accolade for that that's fine.
Physical junk mail. I dont know if you guys get it in the UK. Or if so to what extent.
Rainforests are being chopped down so I can be kept informed about specials on tires that are happening at Townfair Tire and about vinyl siding discounts.
I'd love to see a 30-60 minute compilation video of people pulling a pound of junk paper out of their mailbox whilst their mind is a million miles away in some heated argument on their cellphone as they walk it directly to the trash bin without having even glanced at it while completely wrapped up in their conversation.

This is REALLY, REALLY irritating, in fact I'm pretty pissed off!
I have a mini PC from ASUS, a PN50 which is a nippy little box with a Ryzen 5 6 core CPU that had a base clock of 2.3GHz but boosted to 4.0GHz, so quite nippy . . . . well it was! After an BIOS update ASUS with no mention about the BIOS details, or what they were changing, hobbled the boost clock to a new maximum of 2.4GHz and under normal running it now sits at 1.3GHZ.
That is bang out of order IMO
I could try to roll back the BIOS, but if it goes wrong I'll end up with a bricked useless hunk of metal.

That is helpful Paul and I did find that earlier and tried it out, it does work, although I haven't setup the service to do it automatically - just used the command line to turn it off manually. But I shouldn't have to do that, or don't feel I should and at the very least the BIOS update should have made this clear before updating it. Well IMO it should have been clear they were reducing the unit's performance. I know why they did it, it got really hot, used to sit at 50C at idle and could hit 95C+ under load and the fan went crazy, noisy as hell. It's max operating temp is 105C, so it was close to it's limit. But I bought an AKASA fanless case, so no fan, total silence and much, much better cooling than the puny little fan. With the new case the temps were around 28-30C at idle and it never went over 55C, even at maximum boost. So for me it was never an issue.
Ho hum, what can you do - but I really think that's a poor show not telling people you are about the half the capabilities of their PC.

Very irritating, that. You never know whether a BIOS update is going to improve or hobble performance. Changelog info is sadly lacking for BIOS updates, leaving you in the dark.
EDIT: Minisforum are guilty of this. I've left my UM790 Pro at 1.07 and refuse to install the latest update due to reports that some memory no longer runs at full speed. The changelog is practically useless at providing any clues.

That'll be the last BIOS update I do before carrying out research myself. You will actually laugh at how it happened . . . this is my testing PC, I only use it for trying out different Linux distro's or trying out new software before installing it on my main machine. Anyhoots, I think I've mentioned before, that the only thing that doesn't play nicely with Linux is an old scanner I have. So yesterday I thought why not put Windows 10 on a spare NVMe drive, so if I ever want to use the scanner, just pop the Windows SSD in and off I go. So that's what I did . . . put W10 on, did all the updates, fixed their broken Windows update (KB5034441) error and looked at the 'other optional updates' (why I ask myself). In there was an ASUSTEK firmware update, so I selected it without really thinking what I was doing . . . and the rest is history. I hate Windows even more now!!!!

I also learned the hard way never to apply 'Other optional updates'.
It trashed a machine royally.

The non computer nerds can ignore this, but this is a bit naughty IMO.
I just ran some all core benchmarks in Linux to stress the CPU and get an idea of performance with and without the new ASUS 'hobbled BIOS settings'.
With: Benchmark score: 74,419 Maximum frequency across all cores: 2371 MHz Maximum Temperature: 36 degrees C
Without: Benchmark score: 123,356 Maximum frequency across all cores: 3898 MHz Maximum Temperature: 52 degrees C
I would imagine without the case I have, the temperatures would have been nearer 100 degrees, the CPU throttling and the fan going full tilt - so it's much kinder on the hardware, but with a big reduction in performance . . . so I get why they did it. But doing it the way have on the QT is just not cricket!

Annoying if there's no setting to override it. What you need is burst capability, not constant.

. . . . What you need is burst capability, not constant. Indeed, which is exactly how it used to be!
But it was irritating, so I bit the bullet and decided to try and update the BIOS by rolling back to a previous known OK version. Only tried rolling a BIOS back once before many years ago and it wouldn't let me, so I wasn't hopeful I could, or if it would work or if it would just brick the PC. But I thought what the hell and went for it . . . it worked!
So I'm now back on BIOS version 0620 from the hobbled 0624 and everything works as before, full boost capability up to around 4.0 GHz. Temps go up to about 50 degrees at full load as before, but that's no problem with a CPU Tjmax of 105°C
I have to admit I was shitting my pants whilst the update was in progress, as I really didn't think it was going to work

Well done - I can't think that I've ever rolled back a BIOS. Can't say I recommend it, I really was 50/50 on whether it would work, which if it didn't could have left me with a 500 quid lump of useless electronics!
All in a days work I suppose . . . and feel free to move this topic into my Linux thread if felt a more appropriate home for it?

Bloody Sainsbury's So that's my weeks meal planning up the Swanee. By the time they get their act together I probably won't still require some of the stuff I've ordered, so I won't want to rebook the complete order. Currently there are no free slots until Monday, and they will probably be filled by people who had booked the earliest deliveries today, and that's not me. My shopping was booked between 3pm and 4pm, as usual. It could be Tuesday, or even Wednesday before I can put a replacement order in. Oh well, the freezer needs emptying anyway.
