One reason I stopped going away Much nicer at home !
Way too warm in direct sun. Quite pleasant in the shade amongst the trees around the fields. Also fine with curtains drawn on the sunny side and windows open on the shaded side of the house
37' on the Tour de France today while they went up and down huge mountains at high speed

Getting old, and forgetting that you're getting old. Today I shall mostly be doing very little as I'm stiff, and I ache all over. Like a complete tool, I leant over to pick something up yesterday, without bothering to pick up my walking stick first, overbalanced, and toppled like a stack of bricks. Fortunately I only went down on my knees (which were f*cked to begin with, and the main reason I use a walking stick) and my head was protected by the large, empty, cardboard box which was waiting to go out to the recycling bin, and which I headbutted in lieu of the bedroom wall. Weirdly, I remember that headbutting the box was a conscious decision and was preferable to contorting my body, or snapping a wrist, attempting to arrest my fall. I managed to tuck just enough so that my shoulder followed my head into the cardboard. It was nothing to do with the heat, nothing to do with anything really, except me expecting, subconsciously, more of my body than it could deliver. When I was a tad more compus mentis I thought about the fall which mum took, breaking her hip, and starting her journey from home, to hospital, to care home. A salutary thought indeed. I'll tell you something else, I don't care what anyone says, the first instinct, upon falling, is to bloody-well panic, mostly that you'll not be able to stand up again. Fortunately, once that moment had passed, I levered myself up by holding on to a bookcase, and using my walking stick. Yes, the effing thing was close enough for me to reach, I just, stupidly, hadn't bothered. First and last time for that. I debated with myself all of yesterday afternoon (I fell in the late morning) and this morning, about whether or not to post something like this., Let's be honest, it makes me look like a complete dick, albeit that that's an accurate description. Eventually I thought that perhaps by posting it, it might help prod somebody else into being a bit more careful, and also help anyone who has a fall to realise that " panic" is a perfectly acceptable first response, but if you can still move it needs to be overcome but at your own pace. If it takes you a few minutes (or more) to compose yourself, then so be it. Don't try to leap back up. Stay there, have a wee bit of a rest, work out if anything hurts enough to let you know you've done something serious, and if not, hopefully, stand up and be prepared to feel daft, and a bit vulnerable, especially if, like me, you live alone. Anyway, there it is. Yes, I'm fine, apart from the aches and pains. Older, and hopefully a little wiser, too. If this helps even one person then the ignominy was worth it. If it doesn't? When have I ever bothered about looking datf? You should have seen some of the clothes I wore in the seventies.

my head was protected by the large, empty, cardboard box In future I will also wear a cardboard box on my head for protection when navigating my stately home.

You're not a complete dick, Paul. Maybe runner up but nobody beats Tobey Maguire. Not a fan of his stints as Spider-Man either.
Wow, thanks for the heads up man. Like you said, first and last time without the walking stick. Glad you're on the mend.

May as well be the middle ages. I hope the rest of the world isn't this self absorbed and idiotic.
At movie theater again, in the stall, guy next to me leaves his stall, I wait to hear if he uses the sink. Walked right past the sink.
Not a team player.

My pet peeve with sci-fi films. Hundreds of years, billions of quid/dollars/Alpha Centauri Noogies/Whatever... the best brains in the world(s), all together to advance weapons building. and outfit spaceships of all shapes and sizes with guns that can destroy other craft with a single shot. I've got a simple question. Why do they never spend any money on TARGETING COMPUTERS!!!!!! How come they keep missing? Yes, I know, for the spectacle and the chase scenes, and all of the explosions and stuff, but it always strikes me as slightly ridiculous, and how one misses with a super-hi-tech sniper rifle is beyond me. Maybe the sniper-sights are so advanced they can identify the good guys, and automatically miss them?

The Expanse gave a more accurate portrayal than most, including their weapons being either projectiles or missiles.

Sloppy script writing They could achieve the same end result in the story with more believable scripts Watching a series, won't mention for fear of Spoiling Bloke gets shot by a couple on a motorbike in front of the cop shop in full view of the world So stupid you could hear it in the next town Shoots. Bloke goes down. Not dead. They pull up close to finish him off. Quote from our hero "They were definitely Pros" No they weren't. That was pathetic. The Americans has a lot to answer for in their script writing, acting and production Very little gets anywhere near it

Actually, there's another one too. Doors. People can stand in front of doors - nothing! Walk past doors - nothing. As soon as they walk up to a door and actually want to leave the room - whoosh, the door opens. How in the Hell does it know? Unless it happens to be a door on the Heart of Gold (I hate those doors: Marvin) it will not have AI and mindreading capabilities; it cannot differentiate between somebody walking up to it, and somebody actually wishing to leave the room via it. I think Star Trek (TOS) was probably the biggest culprit ever for dodgy door mechanics.

EVRI, who are turning out to be the worst couriers it's been my displeasure to encounter.
EVRI, for those who don't know, is the new incarnation of Hermes, with whom I never had a moment's cause for concern. Indeed, I always spoke up for them, despite others having problems.
Since they became EVRI they have handled 3 parcels sent to me. The first, they finally admitted to losing, despite it "leaving the depot," and being "on its way." Twice.
The second parcel should have been delivered yesterday, but there are "problems," with my parcel, and they'll "attempt to deliver it next working day." I'd stipulated overnight delivery, by the way. Well, the next working day is, in fact, today, and the info on their tracking page hasn't changed, and if the first parcel is anything to go by, it never will.
The third parcel actually arrived today, which is a day earlier than I'd expected.
Hermes, for me at least, were brilliant. EVRI? Avoid like the plague.

Never liked Herpes or Parcelfarce, but none were as bad as City Link, who thankfully went bust.

That's a shame, I had got used to getting very good service from our local Hermes - their couriers were always really nice round here.

I've been to Central London for the first time in eons today. Oxford Street looked like it always has done - a complete and utter $hitehole.
So many units unoccupied, and lots of poor quality shops. Why on earth can't they sort it out?
Regent Street looks good, mostly very high quality retailers. Ox St is very much the poor relation.

Evri today didn't deliver a parcel on the feeble excuse that the driver, Christophe, couldn't find the address. They asked me to help them but as their site only allowed me one option I chose to nominate a safe place for delivery being the side door.
Well, that should help him, shouldn't it?
Pathetic.

This was the tale of my first lost parcel, from EVRI, and they've edited a lot of the damning evidence out, the crafty buggers.
7 Jun 2022 12:32am At the national sorting hub
and then... 11 Jun 2022 8:01pm At the national sorting hub
Precisely 12 hours later... 20:01 - Sat Jun 11 We've got your parcel and we're processing it for you
And that's all she wrote, as they say. That tracking (dis)information is still live on their site. What they've edited out is the two times it left their depot to go out on delivery.
Their problem resolution also leaves a lot to be desired.
After a bit of investigation, it seems that they changed their name so that they could start again with a "clean slate" and build a better reputation. How's that working out for you, EVRI? Hermes was founded 50 years ago, in West Germany. They are now owned by Advent International, which is an American private equity company, out of Boston.
I decided to check for overseas influences after becoming more and more annoyed (albeit low-level annoyance) with the phrase "...waiting on your parcel...". Were I actually waiting on my pacel, #1 my parcel would be squeshed, and #2 I'd actually have my bloody parcel.
