It's all a part of eBay's "divorce," from PayPal, and a rather poor attempt to take business away from PayPal. Without the support of eBay, PayPal might not have got off the ground, and conversely eBay only grew as fast as it did because of the PayPal link. In 2002. PayPal was actually sold to eBay for $1.5 billion. The spark has gone, though, and the marriage is over. Both sides will be fighting over who gets the kids, and possibly the dog. There's a very good article here, including a timeline, which unfortunately doesn't quite bring us up to date. It's quite instructive though. www.thestreet.com/technology/history-of-paypal-15062744

I'm not so keen on the new eBay payments system.
Buyer paid me today but eBay now have to 'process' payment and transfer to my bank account - hope that will be tomorrow. With PayPal at least the payment is instant! But you are meant to post immediately - I would prefer to know that the money is actually in my account first. eBay takes their new 12.35% cut at source.

From what I've been reading, many vendors aren't dispatching goods until the money is in their accounts. I think that's actually fair enough, there are a lot of shysters on eBay, and I'd want to be sure of receiving the money first but of course, the buyers are getting an even slower service because of it too. It puts two to three days on delivery times.

It's absolutely shite.
I'm sending the parcel without funds in account - it's an international delivery which will take ages anyway so don't want buyer to wait longer than necessary.
Who knows how long payment processing will take at busy times.

As far as buying goes, I've had no problems with eBay and always pay with PayPal.
Is it only selling that's affected?

PayPal is not necessarily an automatic process any more though. I've had to log into my PayPal account externally to verify payment several times.

I'm afraid it's HGV drivers hogging the outside lane on a dual carriageway. Indicate at the last minute, then spend 5 miles crawling 1 mph faster than what theyre overtaking. Then the one behind overtakes them after picking up speed in their slipstream. All HGVs should be banned from overtaking over 40mph,

Who knows how long payment processing will take at busy times. Never again will I sell anything on ebay. I hadn't for a long time, but recently sold my Mytek DAC there, and was incensed to find they had kept my money. I contacted them to complain and was told it is now standard practice when selling high value electronic items to withhold payment until the buyer indicates that they are happy with their purchase. Despite contacting the buyer (who was a genuine and decent bloke) I was still not paid, even after he had left positive feedback. It took three instances of me contacting them, during which they lied to me twice (I have the transcripts to prove this) before the funds were eventually released. How does any of this protect a seller from unscrupulous buyers? Makes it even worse IMO. Never again.

Eduardo, thanks for sharing this painful story - I had no idea that witholding payments could happen like this.
I believe that this is a Paypal policy, not ebay as such, and that basically they can hold onto your payment for 21 days in any circumstance where they think there is a risk of the transaction going pear shaped, like higher valued items, electronics etc etc
Maybe ebay's new policy of not using paypal is a way round this? I was moaning about not getting my money for a couple of days, but I'm much happier avoiding the aggro you have had and have ebay pay straight into my bank account. What I don't know yet is whether ebay have adopted a similar policy to paypal when processing payments. I think it's worth a little further investigation.

[tongue in cheek]People who digest every word of articles written about the Royal Family simply so they can then moan about the Royal Family, and say how glad they'll be when they don't have to read articles about them any more. Here's a tip. You don't have to read about them NOW, guys. I say "guys" because all women love the Royals, the younger the better, (which is, coincidentally, the motto of Prince Andrew, Duke of York, KG, GCVO, CD, ADC ETC.) it's scientific fact. Show any woman a picture of a baby with a crown on his pointy little head, or a scepter in her pudgy, grasping, little fist and said woman will immediately melt into a pile of somewhat unsavoury gooeyness. So, if you see an article with the name of one of the Royals in the title, scroll past it. If you spot a picture of a Royal, well, that probably can't be avoided if you insist on reading the Daily Mail, but try ignoring the " bit with the words in" part, because that's the bit that makes you irrationally angry. [/tongue in cheek]Seriously though, why do people read things just so that they can moan about the same content over and over again. If you try a food that you find particularly awful you don't go back to it at every opportunity just so you can say, " Yes, that still tastes lkie shit," do youi? Do you? Moan and move on. People are the ultimate arbiters of what they do, or do not, read. The people written about hold no sway over them, nor do the "authors" (and I use the word in its ironic sense) of such jingoistic dross. Ignore it, and move on. People could be reading about something useful, and inspiring, like Liverpool hammering Man Utd. 4 - 2 last night at Old Trafford. They could be meditating on the meaning of life, or why Keats and Yeats are pronounced so differently. There are a million possibilities open to them, but they'd rather moan about the Royals? Get your bloody act(s) together.

You have to read a bit of the article before you do an emergency stop and realise that you didn't want to have read the article. Then you go momentarily back in time to avoid reading it in the first place.
Or, because some of us haven't done the time travel module, you purge it.

You guys do realise you actually agreed to eBay's changes of service when you iimmediately binned the update notices they sent out that stated something like " if you're happy you need to do nothing more," don't you?
