Might just be the angle. They do look better in the first photo. Not convinced about the chosen contrasting colours.
I appreciate your design is somewhat different. I do tend to prefer though the cleaner line of Impulse models with lines that are parallel to the front baffle and top.
Given the choice, I'd rather have the ebony version.

My kids keep on at me to embrace social media. I just don't have the aptitude or desire to learn a new language. As a proud Luddite I enlisted my eldest daughter to develop a following on The Instagram She's enjoying building the number of followers and set herself a target of 150 by next Sunday. If anyone has an account and would care to add their contribution it would make this hard working Mother's day... electricbeachaudio Cheers

steveeb brought his excellent new design Blackwoods speakers over to mine for a little evaluation session. They are a small quarter-wave loaded design using Mark Audio main driver and an upward facing ribbon tweeter. After a little experimentation, they work best close to the rear wall as Steve had predicted. What we got was an out-of-the-box sound quite large in scale compared with their size with superb vividness in the midrange and surprising ability in the bass. We pumped a lot of power through them from my Belles amplifier and the driver took it all very well. We played a lot of female vocal of all types and they sounded realistic, detailed and able to retain warmth throughout. Remarkable speakers for those looking for a small floor stander with great WAF and a suitable rear wall. Steve's quality of finish is amazing and he can do them finished any way you like. He is going to bring them to The ASBO for others to hear. My phone didn't want to play ball and this is the only decent shot I got. The Blackwoods are dwarfed by my Ushers.

That was a very informative session Martin, thanks very much. I think you heard a fair representation but also reasonable to assume that having your monoliths to the side but in front was going to affect integration with the room, especially the balancing of their omni directional output. I reckon a room about 2/3rds the size of yours and a listening distance of 4-5 metres would be a good general recommendation for me.
When I returned home I changed nothing with the speakers but the level of solid 3D imaging and transparency which I'm used to getting returned, so I'm sure it's a set up question as your system is far more accomplished than mine. Once again your Ayre player just blew me away!
It was certainly the case that there was little if any difference between Spotify streamed and USB WAV file replay - but the Ayre was at a level of reproduction that was not even in a comparable conversation.

Sorry about the error with drivers, Steve. I've corrected my original text to reflect that there are in fact two drivers.
Yes, the Ayre is a bit special which is why I've moved over so comprehensively from records.

I would be interested to know if these suit smallish rooms?

I'd admit that I personally like the realism that can be created when they are driven a bit, but others have commented on how they retain detail at lower volumes. The top mounted tweeter makes for an open, airy presentation even in a smaller space and it was a design choice that they would be placed close to the rear wall rather than free space.
It's also quite a positive aspect that in a smaller room you would be closer to the speakers, giving less disturbance from any midband from the rear output, and you'd more than likely be sitting close to the opposite wall with good integration.
They work well positioned across a corner, which can be a necessary layout in a smaller room. I think because they intentionally use reflected sound I've had the best results from hard flooring rather than fully carpeted, more 'live' presentation.
