Those who supported the TAS ASBO will remember I brought a pair of speakers that were not ready to listen to, but to ask for some feedback on the cosmetic design: Blackwoods_ 2 Tone_1 by Steve Jay, on Flickr Obviously I thought it was attractive but the general concensus, in the words of Leonard Cohen was "you want it darker". Thought you might be interested to see where your comments led... Certainly a more traditional appearance and probably more in keeping with the naming. Yes Mike, I know they are not black black but I'm working towards it. You know what they say, there's no going back! Probably will have a standard finish of spray painted black cabinet with just the baffle veneered. Had a listen to these recently and very fine speakers they are too. I prefer the new finish to the one Steve showed us at the store They capture guitar really well giving that sense of resonance and prescence that the guitar has. They are also more solid in the bass than the Fugel 3. All in all a lovelly speaker that be hard to beat at 3 times the price

Yes Martin, although these are paper cones rather than the alloy you heard before

I prefer the look of the one's you had at ASBO ,but then I am a bit quirky.

I wonder if there's a psychological effect; if you listened to two pairs of the same speakers but in differing appearance, would you think the ones that you prefer the look of sound better...?

To be honest I like the look of both pairs, but like Rob, I prefer the ones you had at the ASBO.

The Blackwood's 2 tone look phenomenal. I really like the styling and contrasting woods. If they sound as good as they look you've done a great job.

Much prefer the new version. As you have both you could offer both, but only the 2 styles. Different colours available at a premium ! They are so nearly black I can grant them honorary black status

The Blackwood's 2 tone look phenomenal. I really like the styling and contrasting woods. If they sound as good as they look you've done a great job. Cheers, Bigman. They do. They needed a little tweeking as some of the angles weren't quite complimentary and caused optical illusions with the cabinet shape - doh! That front baffle is actually vertical... and seeing ply edges, regardless as to how well they are finished, is quite a Marmite thing.

That curved top side panel reminds me of the old Impulse Horn speakers

So it does. I didn't take it from them, it just evolved from stiffening the cabinet and needs to change a bit more yet.

Nice review I love the last quote " Their performance does have (ultimate) limitations but within the design parameters these speakers produce a musical experience which is very difficult to beat. An audition is probably a prerequisite, and certainly in the context of your own listening space if at all possible, but don’t be surprised if, when you do buy a pair, you can’t turn them off. Highly recommended"
