For any fellow sci-fi fans out there Sunday is a big day - Channel 4 start their 10 show run of Philip K Dick short story adaptations. There are some big names involved like Bryan Cranston, Tim Spall, Anna Paquin, and Steve Buscemi to name but a few. I for one am looking forward to it immensely. Set your recorders for 21:00 Ch4 on Sunday 17/09/2017 for The Hood Maker starring Richard Madden ( Game of Thrones), Holliday Grainger ( Strike), Noma Dumezweni (Dr. Who, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.), and Anneika Rose ( Line of Duty). More details here... Radio Times Episode GuideFor anyone still wondering who Philip K Dick was, he's the man who wrote the original stories that became The Man In The High Castle, Blade Runner, Total Recall, The Adjustment Bureau, Minority Report and many more well known films and TV series.

Good reminder, thanks Paul. I've read most of his stories and look forward to seeing this series. Is A Scanner Darkly one of them?

A Scanner Darkly is already a movie Martin, apart from which the new telly series is based on short stories, not novels, so no. I had the pleasure of interviewing Bob Sabiston, the guy who developed the rotoscoping software that gave the 'A Scanner Darkly' movie such an original appearance back in 2006.

That's a film I missed when it came out. I must look it up.

It's...unusual. It certainly is, but easily adapted to. I can see the reality underneath and it soon blends. I found the Blu-ray cheap today so bought it.

Most of Dick's books could be described as unusual, but the film...well...I'll let you decide. Fantastic cast though.

I've just watched "The Hood Maker" and will not say too much about it for fear of spoilers. I did enjoy it though and am looking forward to the rest of the series.
I would like to mention the music. It wasn't until the final credits that I realised why it sounded familiar to me. It was composed and performed by Ólafur Arnalds, an artist I have many albums by including one excellent collaboration with Nils Frahm.
If you enjoy the music check out the composer. Here's one of his more 'commercial' pieces, from the 2016 album Island Stories. It features Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir on vocals and it's the track I first fell in love with and that made me want to dig deeper into his catalogue.
A lot of his music is in a more ambient vein and I'd say you should have a good listen to his stuff (there's loads on YouTube for instance) before shelling out your hard earned cash. It's actually reminded me of something else now, a soundtrack by Colin Towns for a late seventies film called Full Circle which I have on vinyl somewhere but again, can be found on YouTube. It sounds a bit like a cross between Ólafur Arnalds and Goblin in places. At least, it does to my ears. Loads of piano and analogue synths.

I bet it doesn't sound much like The Ian Gillan Band!

Disappointed with The Hood Maker. Not that bad, but at a lower level than I thought
Trying to give it a Bladerunner feel even though a different story.

I have it on series link. I didn't realise they were based on a book series, I guess most things usually are.

...Fortunately the acting was good enough to make it worth watching though. At one stage I thought Richard Madden might be channeling his inner David Tennant as Dr. Who. I was expecting him to rush off into the distance shouting " Allons-y." It was a good enough introduction to the series I thought and I'm rather disappointed by the number of direct comparisons to Black Mirror that I'm reading which, when summed up, amount to Black Mirror was set in a closer future and Black Mirror was more humourous. I wonder if some of those reviewers have read any Philip K Dick tales, because they obviously don't realise that what he wrote about, in the main, was supposed to make one think rather than guffaw. I've seen the next couple of episodes described as " not as engaging" as The Hood Maker. I for one am looking forward to making my own mind up.

Yes, me too. I liked the Black Mirror series but they were variable in quality - the best were really thought provoking.
I will approach these with a fresh mind. I rarely go by what others think of drama series!
