When I was about 20 I was lucky to work with a guy into HiFi, although I was interested in creating what I thought passed for music at the time, he played keyboards and we mostly discussed that. He returned from lunch one day and showed me a needle he'd just bought for his LP12, cost him £100 - and I thought he was barking mad! The extent of my understanding and exposure at the time was to buy a Pioneer 'separates' stack rather than a music centre, to my shame. "I can't explain" he said, "you'll have to come and listen". He used the Linn with an Audiolab 8000 and Ruark Talisman speakers. Two weeks later I paid £100 for a pair of baby Missions to replace the Pioneer's supplied - and there started a lifetime of justifying ever escalating expenditure on music reproduction equipment. Oh, so lucky.

I too was a Pioneer man back in the early 80's until I met a guy (now my best mate )who had a Armstrong amp with a pair of AR speakers and that was me sold, it's only recently that I've come to a conclusion that what I have is not that bad but it's been a long road with plenty of enjoyment.

Exposure is necessary, but you have to be informed and receptive. When I first went to the home of what was to become my outlaws, I immediately spotted the same Pioneer amp/ tape/ tuner as in Barrington's winning photo, with a pair of large Ditton speakers. I was told they were supposed to be the "state of the art". I wasn't impressed with the sound, soft and muddy and I felt superior with my mismatched entry level separates. I tried to get them to move the speakers - one was to the side of the room and the other behind the settee! I never did hear their potential. And we got divorced, so no luck to inherit them In the TV series Mr Mercedes an integral feature of the lead character is his playing of vinyl. However, he has two huge Cerwin Vega speakers, one in the corner by the door and the other sideways up at the ceiling on top of a bookcase!

Probably accurately reflects the average uninformed owner of a music system. I had a friend who had arranged his speakers at diagonal opposite corners of the room. When I explained the error of his ways to him, he refused to move them as he had already explained it to his wife and didn't want to lose face!

That's pretty sad when you can't take advice

I take advice from my worst enemy, or steal ideas
