while living in Tennessee I was installing a heat pump for a customer when I spied a Marantz 7b power amp that had broken valves and cobwebs over it I asked the man if he was interested in selling it he said that there was a dude that he knows who wanted to buy it but was waiting for the money so he will sell it to me, i paid him a poultry sum of 200 bucks and took it home I revalved it and the thing sang wonderful for me and I ended up selling my modified mark 4 dynaco's and kept it for years.
What luck with hifi have you had?.

The best is undoubtedly the pair of Gale GS-401C speakers that I bought on eBay as 'breaking for spares' for the princely sum of £34. I refurbished them and they're still going strong. See here.

I would say I have been lucky enough to have had a number of great value buys.
Probably the best, judging by the surging ebay prices, are my Tannoy Chatsworths with 12" HPD's which I got for £500. I couldn't believe that the dude didn't want any more money for them!

My Radford STA-15 only cost me 250 and they are currently fetching up to north of 1500.
My Mirage speakers were 208 or 280 - I cannot properly remember, from one careful owner who originally paid well over 3K plus the cost of shipping them from Canada to Singapore.
Goldring G99 plus Decca ffss and Decca mk4 cartridge were very cheap indeed from a forum friend.
My first Zeta tonearm with the extremely rare gold coloured armtube (one of the first 20 ever made) was 150 and there was a Koetsu Black thrown in for good measure.....

My best luck is non HiFI A friend gave me a free ticket to see Paul Gilbert do a guitar clinic. At the clinic they were raffling off a Laney Guitar Amp which I won ( i had a free raffle ticket given to me). Sold the amp a week later as had a better sounding guitar amp

Recently I got an STD 305S with Mission 774 arm and Audio Technica AT32 & QED battery step up for £150. That's like getting the deck for free ... I had a 305S for years, built like a tank it is and looks a bit like one ...

Mine would be the Yamaha NS1000M that JLand100 sold me for peanuts because he hated the sound of them.

best luck i had was to get hold of a garrard 401 that wanted some work to get it running for the princely sum of 50 quid. second best bit of luck was the jvc ql-y5f i picked up last year for 80 quid. just finished restoring it. it did look like this DSC_0631 by anthony cresswell, on Flickr after a bit of graft it looks like this Restoration complete by anthony cresswell, on Flickr stuck the third best bit of luck, the at150sa i got for 160 quid which is now on it and playing mozart clarinet concerto in a major

Nice job - how does the sound quality of the JVC compare to something like the 401? The arm looks like an interesting design - not seen that before ...

The robot arm on is an active damped arm. the box on the side has a set of linear motors in it that control the damping in the vertical plane, there is another set of linear motors under the arm that control damping in the horizontal plane. The bias, tracking force and automatic functioms are all controlled by these motors. Theres no additional friction at all from the motors so with the q damping turned off it behaves as a normal arm. but the damping certainly works The auto functions are lovely to have to be honest. the wife wont touch any of my turntables, hasnt for years, but she has used this one quite abit since I finished it. Sound quality wise, its comparable with an sl1200. I think its abit warmer than a 1200 though. its of that ilk rather than a 401. Its smoooooooooth and cultured and clean and completely unflappable. It hasnt the punch of an idler, its a different presentation. Ive found it very difficult to choose between my lenco and this. and the auto functions are so very convenient. It a very nice sounding unit for not a great deal of money
