If anyone is interested in tracking down great recordings from the golden age of classical vinyl, then you might find the Penguin Stereo Record Guide as indispensable as I have.
I just find their recommendations so reliable.  Each recording is rated up to three stars in terms of performance and then sound quality. They award a rosette for their very best recordings.
