What have you got connected to the USB expansion block? Is any of those items an audio device of some sort?

The block is self powered. what i have connected at the mo is an outboard CD ROM, outboard hard drive & an HRT Streamer. i wont be using the headphone out on the laptop but would like to know why this is happening

Most headphone sockets have an extra contact that detects when a headphone is plugged in, and then the sound is diverted to the headphones. If the PC manufacturer has done the same in your case, they might have linked that headphone detection pin to the USB audio detection. One way to find out is to connect each one of the items you now have in that USB block directly to the PC USB socket and try the headphones again. You can then see if it is one of those devices that is causing the issue, or if it is solely down to the USB block.

If any of the connected USB devices were audio, it could disable the headphone/line jack.

I strongly suspect that the HRT Streamer is being automatically selected as the output device. The headphone output on the PC is also the line level output.
