In days of yore Jowett (made in Bradford) used a flat four engine, and the Morris Minor engine bay was made to accomodate a flat four, but the engine never materialised.
Then there is, of course, the venerable VW Beetle engine.

Another good thing about a Cayman is it worth putting a decent stereo in it because of the cabin space.
The Porsche flat 4 was generally hated by the reviewers which really didn't help it. Up at Silverstone when they invited me to a track day for two and a free meal I drove the 2.0 and 2.5, but I have also had a 718T 2.0 for a couple of days.
The engine isn't as bad as has been made out IMHO but it drinks fuel like no tomorrow when you start 'driving it' when fuel consumption figures become much worse than the flat 6s. They are noticeably quicker but not it would seem by the amount of extra fuel they need to do it.
What is bad is a 911 C4 cabriolet. The turbos whistle like shite with the roof down and I found it plain annoying.
My sister has a Cayenne but also a Taycan in order. She also has an F Type, and a Fiat 500. She drives the Fiat more than the others. Really.

The Beetle engine and Porsche are linked, aren't they? Wasn't the original air-cooled flat-six derived from it?

Many moons ago for a customer, we fitted a 3.6 Turbo porker engine in an Alfa Sud and spent longer making the 4 wheel drive fit the chassis that was fun.
The Flat four Alfa engines we also designed by F Von Porsche. Another interesting project was the installation of tan Itergale' engine in the rear of a Fiat Uno around 290@ the wheels (rear) in something that weighed as little a Krell monoblock (these days). Though I did have to seam weld up the whole chassis as it would twist on tale off lol
To many Porkers over the years to count, some a great others are just Dick Lovett play things, though the GT3 is very respectable.

And I'd be lying if I didn't think they were good in other ways. But yeah they do feel a bit cheap in terms of build quality.

Yes Justin electric is going to happen no quibble, but there are many lessons that need to learned along the way. There is a chap who lives not to far away from where we reside and his Telsa has been 'improved' and it mighty fast to about 100 odd reckon it could keep up with my bike to about 70. However its all fluff, plus the price tag man, the build quality is bad for a car out that perceived value. door trim security anyone? Still happy with my little c class, and 38mpg is not too shabby for 1300lbs of torque availability starting from 1200rpm

These days its knocking on for 720@ wheels but it emissions are genuinely very good I did pay attention to this! Still fun playing with expensive exotica from time to time, though I did get some very funny looks when I opened to boot to put some Archoil cetane improver in the tank when the chap next to me filling up asked 'Why is there a bottle of propane gas bottled into the boot of your car!'

Beachy Head GT86/BRZ car meeting today. Lovely sunny day, albeit windy. There was coffee and an ice-cream van. What more could you want? I drove there on minor roads and thoroughly enjoyed it, with not too much traffic around.

Nope. Some came who said they weren't, and two were just driving past, saw us and joined in!
On the way home, another GT86 tooted two of us driving home. I thought "I didn't notice him" and it turned out to be just a coincidence.

We generally have a good chat about cars, inspect each other's beasts, get tips and tricks on improvements and how to install things, help each other with fixes for problems and have an all-round good bit of camaraderie.
Depending on where we go, we have breakfast together or coffee & cake or an ice cream. Breakfast at Denby's is popular on account of the excellent breakfasts and that they make space in their car park for car clubs, different ones each day. I've done that one three times and it's always been fun. One time there was a supercar club gathering too, and drivers of Audi R8s, Ferraris and McLarens were coming over and looking at our cars. All good fun and not a million miles away from an informal hi-fi gathering. There is remarkably little willy-waving and lots of females attending. More than with hi-fi.

Nice one Martin, looks fun. I love that area dearly - spent every summer visiting grandmother nearby as a kid. My first job was selling ice creams in a van perched on nearby cliffs! Quite a few Flakes seemed to go missing ... We took our new Mazda out for its first long journey this weekend and it did very well indeed. Managed to do the return journey on one tank of petrol, including a 1.5 hr trip near Manchester. That's over 60mpg for motorway driving which isn't bad for a 2 litre engine. So nice to have cruise control for the 50/60mph zones, makes a real difference.

Nice one, Jules. My supercharged 2 litre engine is obviously not as efficient, but I was pleased with around 34mpg with spirited driving.
