Hmm, looks like I am mistaken and haven't tried the Nadurra Oloroso.
It's a NAS release, like the Aberlour and Glengoyne versions on a theme.
Got to be worth a shot as prices are much lower than the aforementioned ...

I suddenly fancy a sip of Ben Nevis single malt when I get home.

Nice. Which version do you have - sherried or 'regular'? Apologies Jules, this one via Ocado, non chill filtered matured in first fill American white oak casks.

Nice whisky that Ben Nevis Martin - robust and old school in style. I've got a small 4YO sample bottled at 61% You may or may not know that Ben Nevis is owned by Nikka and a lot of their product is shipped to Japan. Here's the kicker, a lot is used for Japanese Nikka bottlings, apparently if it's aged in Japan and bottled there (I think they mature it in railway sidings), then they can call it Japanese Whisky - so you might think you're buying Japanese when you buy Nikka blends (not sure which ones exactly), but it comes from Ben Nevis. Now I have no problem with that, but it should be made clear on the bottle IMO.
Stick with the Ben Nevis I reckon as I feel a lot of Japanese whisky is overpriced, it's good, but I consider scotch better value for money.
A bit of whisky nerdishness there for you

Very interesting Tim. I would quite agree that the labelling should be 100% transparent about origin.
I guess another difference is that from time to time it's possible to pick up relative bargains with Scotch. Not so with Japanese whiskies, decent stuff starts over 60 quid and the really good gear you pay through the nose for. You don't often see them 'on sale'. I would love to try some of the more exotic Japanese bottlings but my Premium Bonds need to step up first!

I've been on the tour of the Ben Nevis distillery and it's a great place with a lot to see. Not to mention the smells! As well as the obvious single malts, the blended is one of the best I've ever tried. Really nice!

The moral being, don't get your Nikkas in a twist.

I would love to try some of the more exotic Japanese bottlings but my Premium Bonds need to step up first! I've tried a handful of Japanese whiskies, but never bought a bottle myself. They were all good and I enjoyed them, but IMO were over priced by about 20/25%. I also don't think they differ enough from Scotch, when I can pick up a Springbank, Kilkerran, Deanston or Glengoyne (with full provenance) for less money.
I view them the same way as I do Macallan, very good whisky but overpriced and more a lifestyle product. Perhaps the Apple or Levis of the whisky world and as what's in the bottle is more important to me than what's on the label, I don't buy them (I'll happily drink them though ).
Haha, that's funny - Premium Bonds winnings, that's my whisky budget. Mind you I'm in the red at the moment!

Ooohhh that's a bit harsh young Tim! Overpriced yes, but I am yet to taste a Japanese whisky that hasn't been of excellent quality. I also like the fact that they manage to create very different flavour profiles to Scotch - things like Hibiki are most distinctive indeed. In fact, I would go as far to say that there are many more Scotch whiskies that are way too lifestyle marketed and overpriced ... Dreck like David Beckham's Haig come to mind.

Haha, harsh but fair maybe, but you know me Jules, never one to not speak my mind! Don't get me wrong I think they are very good, I just think you can buy comparable Scotch for less money, but in fairness I've probably only tried half a dozen, which compared to a much higher number of scotch whiskies, is perhaps an unfair comparison. But I'm not really a fan - maybe I need to try more? I'm not sure what I'd class David Beckham's 'Haig Club' as . . . some sort of alcoholic drink. It does come in a nice bottle though

This is the kind of nonsense dreamt up by rabid marketeers that winds me up .... < Shackleton Blended Malt Scotch is based on the spirit supplied to the 1907 British Antarctic Expedition, expertly crafted using a selection of the finest Highland Single Malt Scotch Whiskies. > Is it really now? Tenuous much. The Master Blender says - “I WANTED TO CAPTURE THE ESSENCE OF SIR ERNEST SHACKLETON WITHIN THIS WHISKY.”
Well I am sorry Mister Master Blender but thou dost talk bollox sir. I think Sir Ernest was far from ordinary and mediocre, which is probably a kind assessment of your cheap whisky that shops are struggling to give away ...

But I stopped buying mainstream supermarket whisky sometime ago, precisely because of nonsense like this. It's a mass market product, priced accordingly and as you comment, they often struggle to nearly give it away.
It has it's place for sure for people who maybe occasionally buy some whisky, who don't know any better and likely don't really care - probably going to get drowned in coke anyway, which is also fine, drink your drink how you like it and enjoy it. But it's not a serious dram if you seriously enjoy whisky.
But I'm a nerd and that for me is fine too
