If you had the techobility to build a Amplifier would you build ? I'll start the ball rolling with what I would build. John Lindsay Hood class A amplifier of the highest output I could build.

Being Mr. Non Technical I will have to hear what others say.
The Belles Pre and power setup I have take some beating so on that I would build Belles clones

I built a John Linsley-Hood class AB quasi-complimentary direct coupled push pull solid state amp, the 75W Wireless World published design. It was excellent for its time, using all-NPN transistors (BDY56) due to the higher cost and lower rating of PNP equivalents. That amp gave me lots of music during my teenage years.

I didn't know you built your own electronics Martin ,nice one mate I wish I had the mathematical brain to do such things,i guess that's the cost of laying out of school to much.

Always loved electronics, tinkered since I was single digits and took my degree in electronic engineering.
Don't do much any more except mod Stan's excellent DACs.

John Lindsay Hood class A amplifier of the highest output I could build. Interesting choice, Tim. I wouldn't build anything as I have no interest in that. But I have got a Chinese amp which is supposed to be based on the JLH circuit. It's class A and 10wpc, and it sounds very good indeed! A Nobsound ( ) NS-02G One of these ...

Another pass f5 but the turbo version, or an f6 clone. Or finish the 300b amp I never completed Or the push pull acp1 I designed but never built ( 40s British valve that are unobtainium now). Or if i dared, a 211 se

Apart from the f5 turbo or maybe the f6 the others are pipedreams. The cost on the 300b got rediculous which was why I never finished it The acp1 was just to see if i could, and the 211 cost would be astronomical these days

Is it mainly because of the cost of the tranies

Valves too - the cost of 300B and 211 valves is considerable.

I can't believe I forgot about the valves and I just re-valved my 6550 based amp and that cost me £120.00 for the output valves I dread to think what a pair of 211 or 300b would run. WhenI lived in Tennessee 10 years ago there was a old guy that run a junk yard and bought out the nuclear labs at Oak Ridge shut down stock I got from there 300b's many utc potted transformers ,silver cable that I made into interconnects all kinds of good stuff and for next to nothing,
The only trouble was word soon spread so it soon became well picked over
