So I'm visiting Crete next week. Booked completely on a whim, I'm spending seven days in Heraklion in a couple of simple hotels. I've been so busy working and trying to buy a house that I have done virtually zero research! Was just wondering if anybody here had visited? And if so, any recommendations on where to visit? I'm planning on hiring either a moped or a car, so I'm more than happy to travel about - but I'm assuming it's a small island anyway... Thanks in advance.

I used to holiday there every year for 15 years. Its all nice. Agios Nikolaos is on the East side, This is where all the big liners come in for stop off.Nice place to eat drink & chill.Theres a tourist centre on the promenade, you can get loads of info. Herakilion is where the airport is, quite a bit of history around that area. I always stayed away from Malia at night. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agios_Nikolaos,_Crete#/media/File:Agios_Nikolaos_R02.jpg

I've asked my Greek sister-in-law who has visited the island many times.
First thing you need to know is that it is huge, and the largest of all the Greek Islands. With the distances and roads journeys can take a lot of time.
The most important archaeological site is the ancient city of Knossos just south of Heraklion and it's a must.
Other places to consider - there is a very beautiful old town with castle called Rethimno west of Heraklion.
At Toplou there is a 15th century monastery that is very picturesque and well worth a visit.
There is a lovely beach at Vai which is famous for its forest of palm trees...
Matala is a village with another good beach - it is most well known for its neolithic caves which a bunch of hippies lived in during the 60's before getting kicked out...
And for something completely different, apparently the Watercity water park is a lot of fun if you like that kind of thing!
