I find open back have a more open sound, with wider sound stage, whereas closed back sound a lot more constrained.
The biggest difference is the amount of sound heard by others, open back leak a lot of sound.

I would say that closed headphones give more bass welly, but it's a generalisation. They do exclude external sounds well, though.

My experience is that they both do bass equally well, but open back is generally more subtle.

I don't use phones anymore, but my experience would lead me to agree with Martin.

Both can be excellent I had a few open designs in the past and can be very holographic and detailed but heard a few close designs that I like too. Find a good dealer that willing to let you try out different designs. Comfort has been one of my biggest issues I think headphones are the best way to get good sounds on a reasonable budget

I suppose I ought to qualify my post above by saying that my own preference has always been for open backed designs but if I was a bass freak, then I'd be looking at the others.
