There's always room for Nicola Benedetti.

I have to confess that I have never really taken to the lass. Can you recommend a particularly good recording to start me off? (Please, no, not the Four Seasons or some encore crap )

She is very good at the Bruch, which I have heard live.

Yes she is a superb Bruch interpreter!
I've not heard that particular recording - I must admit that *some* of her releases on Decca have been rather on the 'commercial' side and my real interest in her playing lies in live performances.
I will certainly be giving that a listen though.

OK, thanks for that. Making a poor choice, I started with the Mendelssohn. Very work(wo)manlike at times, I thought. Only her 2nd recording back in 2006. Sounds to me like she was rushed into the recording studio before she was ready. I'd like to hear what she would do with it now, because .... .... the Bruch was excellent! That was from 2010 and she was clearly much more in command of her instrument and actually had something interpretive to say about the music, if not exactly breaking any new ground. And then onto 2016 - probably my favourite violin concerto; Shostakovich #1. I was not hopeful, tbh. But she confounded my expectations - an excellent and deeply felt performance. And her technical virtuosity was at times breathtaking. Some of the playing toward the end of the 3rd movement cadenza shows all previous virtuosi how it should be done. Amazing. So, yup, OK, I'm a convert. I'd like to hear her in the Beethoven now.

Fabulous, I'm glad you are starting to see what she is all about Jerry!
If you can find her playing Bruch's Scottish Fantasy I would check that out, as I found it mind-blowing when she played it at the Barbican a while back.
Apart from being an immensely talented and committed musician, she does a lot of work promoting classical music amongst youngsters which gets a big thumbs up from me.
