Although not directly classical, this album was my first introduction into Opera and I have always liked it. It has a good selection of artists and songs and I personally think it is a good starter-for-ten for anyones Opera journey. Spotify: The album on Spotify is a combo which contains both the Essential Opera and Essential Opera 2 albums.

I am throwing a sick note for the minute. I have an ear infection in my left ear and the world sounds very strange at the moment. I am also struggling to catch up at work I had a quick listen to a few favourites, and in principle I want to be first in the queue to support someone championing opera, but complying with the rule about listening the whole way through is proving frustrating right now Certainly love the choices. Carmen is a great "accessible" opera from the start, Le Nozze great farce (although I can't listen to the bloody thing because my wife, Suzanne, who played Susanah for her final degree performance at Trinity, inevitable sings along) - and the barber continues the fun Struggle a bit with Mimi's tiny frozen hand, La Boheme is better theatre than music Some great voices on there, even through my muffled hearing. Fabulous that it includes La Wally - find the french cult film "Diva" to hear Willhelminia Wiggins Fernandez singing it (and get a pretty good thriller into the bargain) Are we counting the double album? Cos if so, it has all my picks with "the British Airways ad" aka Lakme on the 2nd disk Fine choice Paul - itching to listen properly and vote

Despite being a rabid classical music fan I've never been able to get on with opera as a genre. The music's structure and content is subservient to the theatrical melodrama - which to me is heresy! So, the only way I can usually actually appreciate it is to listen to individual arias and choruses for their own sake, rather than as part of a theatrical performance. This sort of 'Highlights' compilation is therefore excellent for me! As per usual, they've dug into their vaults for older recordings for this type of issue - but when vocalists like Pavarotti, te Kanawa, Domingo, Milnes, Tebaldi, Carreras etc etc are provided, there really is nothing to complain about. Some of these arias were new to me, others were old favourites. Nice one, I really enjoyed it. 4/5.

La Wally and the Lakme are particular favourites of mine. Like Jerry, my tolerance of Opera is akin to musicals, very low, and I simply don't want to watch it. These picks are good and the performances mostly great, but I tire of it quickly and prefer to dip in as I need. 3-4/5 so I'll be generous and give it a 4.

Nice scores,
I am not overly fond of Opera, but this one just strikes the balance right for me for whatever reason.

I can see why this would be a great (double) album for people who like a good tune but can't hack a 2 hour plus opera. The performances are at best excellent and the arias/songs well chosen (apart from there being only one Wagner track, and that's the one bit of opera 99% of the adult population can hum along to even if they do think it's from either Apocalypse Now or Bugs Bunny) in the main so there really is nothing to dislike about it. A solid 4 from me.
My wife hates me for introducing her to "What's Opera Doc?" You can find the whole thing on YouTube as well as (I kid you not) live action remakes.
