There was a bit on Radio 4 at the weekend. It seems the Russians look at homosexuality with a certain amount of distain and don't like the idea of this aspect of Nureyev's life being highlighted. It also had full frontal nudity, which wasn't on.

Thanks I hadn't heard about that - how depressing!
They have an interesting attitude to being gay in Russia - sweep it under the carpet so it doesn't exist ...

And all well and good to give them a very hard time. Blind eyes will be turned. Pretty bad to be in any sort of opposition to Putin, Muslim, etc
Aljazeera had a series of programmes made by a Russian about Russia. More interesting than I thought and some jaw dropping moments. Russia not a favourite country. Robust tending to brutal

Under a 2013 Russian law, private individuals deemed to be "promoting non-traditional sexual relationships among minors” and “creating a distorted image of the social equivalence of traditional and non-traditional sexual relationships." face fines of up to 5,000 roubles (£67; $85), while officials risk paying 10 times that amount. Businesses and schools can be fined up to 500,000 roubles. It is widely accepted that "non-traditional" means "gay." The European Court of Human Rights has ruled that the so-called "gay propaganda" law is discriminatory and encourages homophobia. The judges ruled 6 to 1 against Russia. The judge who dissented, Dmitry Dedov, is Russian. In addition, Andrey A. Klishas, a member of the Federation Council, the upper house of Russia’s Parliament, said the country would not honor the decision “because it contradicts the Russian Constitution.” This year, it emerged that gay men had been detained and tortured in the Chechnya region of Russia, in what observers likened to a pogrom. The Russian government has added a Photoshopped picture of Vladimir Putin wearing makeup to a registry of prohibited “extremist” content. But we're not in Russia. So this is banned... But he's happy with this..? Homosexuality was decriminalised in Russia in 1993.

As recently as 1993!
Still, in Britain they only decriminalised it in 1967 and only if you were over 21 and in private. Also pretty shocking that we considered personal acts between two consenting adults to be anyone's business before then.
