Got an email last night - I was hosting a lot of older photos on Photobucket and publishing them to 3 party sites. BBC reportI noticed Photobucket was becoming virtually unusable (very slow and clunky) over 7 months ago and switched to another supplier. A similar thing happened with Webshots years before. Their demise was even weirder, if memory serves. Don't think i will be paying £303 a year to get them back up. It's not worth it to me personally. I don't think it's wrong to have to pay either, but perhaps not right the way it's being done? Martin, Is it possible you could reopen the edit function on posts so that we could replace the photos that are now showing

We can't do that without compromising the site, but if you send me links to replace photos in existing posts I will amend them.
I still recommend Flickr for photo hosting. It's used by a lot of professional photographers, gives you 1TB of storage and is ad-free. It also works very well with TAS.

Thanks for the info Martin. I am afraid there are too many in my System Blog to burden you with that task. I too use Flickr. I do hope they don't go all weird on us at some point in time. I'm kinda hoping that Photobucket will see sense and offer a home user category, or base it on volume. Hosting perhaps an added 20 photos a month is not worth $39 a month. You'd think that for the millions of small scale photo hostings they have, some revenue would be better than none. I'd pay something, like some other sites require. They are obviously happy to loose the chance for that revenue - seems odd. Perhaps a parent company lost interest and wants the plug pulled on all this free shite Meanwhile, lets see what the media backlash does for them.

There are all manner of websites that think they can charge a considerable amount after having been free and also retain their user base. I fear that their business models are simply not realistic.

I think it's a bloody outrage, to be honest. I don't mind paying either but not when it's carried out like this. You are correcd Steve, ransom is the best word to describe it. I have quite a few images there but moved away from them a few years ago because of the weight of advertising. A short visit back there a couple of weeks ago and the adverts made it all but impossible to carry out any task at all. Hopefully, their users will just walk away and let them die.

Photobucket pictures I posted on this forum are still showing. Is this just new uploads? It appears the policy is aimed at EBay and Amazon sellers etc (commercial sites) for which there are plenty alternative solutions. I can't see them making money on this.

No pics there.

Just logged into my Photobucket account - still active and no ransom demand!
All my photos posted from Photobucket to this and other sites are still intact, so must be a selective process, possibly based on usage?

Think this is why photobucket was being a dick with me. I got an email saying we've reduced your facilities because I've been sharing photos to third party sites!
Bloody nonsense.

Some on AoS were ransomed 3-4 days earlier than I was. Here's hoping though.

I've opened an account with Postimage just in case. No advertising shit and fast uploads.

I got the email from them today, to notify me that I have been selected to give them money. Deleted my account and took the opportunity to tell them why.
Now I have some work to do to get stuff into Flickr.

Yes, I've been using it for a couple of years now. I used Imageshack for years before P/Bucket but I'll have to shift 120 or so to get things back to where they were though.

Flickr is definitely the photographer's choice.

This was the final straw for me, I have created a Flickr account and will transfer my pictures over there... it is also a lot more pleasant to use than Photobucket which is full of shitty adverts!

I've got my 3D modelling images and the pictures of my guitars on Imgur and backed up on Pinterest as well as on my own webspace. Getting a Flickr account may just be overkill in my case.
