An album that failed to get critical acclaim at time of release and was badly promoted. It did manage to chart slightly higher than it's acclaimed predecessor Rumor and Sigh. Criticism was over it's production style while ignoring the quality of the songs. In fact I think this is one of RT's strongest and I don't have a particular problem with the sound (produced by Mitchell Froom). It happens to contain my favourite Thompson song, 'Beeswing'. The album was released in 1994 and was available on CD and Vinyl. Mirror Blue Wikipedia page

Great choice and a great excuse to play some Richard Thompson. Beeswing is my 2nd favourite track of his. My favourite is the obvious one.

Thanks for this, Paul. I have some Richard Thompson on vinyl and never got on with it. I pull him out every few years to see if I feel differently, but I don't. I took this opportunity to revisit him with an album I've not heard before. The opener For the Sake of Mary has a good groove and I can just about cope with his voice. However, on other tracks where his singing is more prominent, like the aforementioned Beeswing, it all falls apart. I just don't like his voice. On my scale where I'm weighing up whether I'll be playing his music again, I can only give it a 3/10.

You get the songs but with Linda's voice to mellow things. Some of his albums are hard work. Just played Mock Tudor and reminded myself why I hadn't played it since 2000. Beeswing is sublime. Something wrong if you think that one falls apart.

Playing it now. I don't know this album at all, though I do have a few of his on my shelves. I neatly fall into the ranks of those who hate his voice. However, I do give him a spin every now & then because I appreciate his guitar playing. This is better than I worried it might be! Back later after a few more spins.

Thanks Paul, I have heard a few Richard Thompson albums but not this one, so I'll give it a go.

Quite like some of the music but am not particularly a fan of his voice, think 5/10 is fair.

I gave it a 4. The third track 'MGB-GT' epitomises precisely what I hate about RT's voice.

Unlike a few here, I do not have an issue with the sound of RT's voice. OK, it's a bit Fair Isle sweater and finger in ear (nyaahhhh!), but it's not a major obstacle. RT comes from a folk tradition, which explains the vocal style.
This album is new to me, and it has enough about it to make me want to keep returning to it. Musically the songs are all really good, even when roots rock and roll comes to the fore. Lyrically I prefer the songs that are sung in first person. These songs are much more personal. The narrative songs are OK, but songs of who did what, where, and why don't usually strike a chord with an audience, and it's the case here.
The standout song for me is the lyrical and melancholic King of Bohemia, but all of the songs are high calibre, so I give it a 6 for the time being (it might climb higher over time, and with repeated playings).

Some good song song writing and musicianship but the vocals are something that really get in the way for me so I give it a 5

I almost get RT. Have tried him out a few times and not been completely convinced
Love his work with Fairport and Loudon Wainwright. I find his voice almost palatable. "The way that it shows" is wonderful guitar. Reminds me so much of Fairport going off on one. Could be worth buying the album just for that. Wish he would do an album of tracks like that. 4/10
