This was the last time the tour was in our town. They are just turning off the D118 (route de Perpignan) onto the D117 which leads to the plateau de Sault and back to Foix - after the dreaded "col de portel". They are about to start the hill climb. Our only cycle race this year will be the Criterion, which attracts a lot of big names. But there are no hills to climb in that

When you say the Criterion do you mean the Criterium du Dauphine ?

Bloody mobile devices and spellcheckers Yes - the Criterium. Not sure about the dolphin This event - I believe the oldest race in France - great fun because although very serious cyclists race very fast for a couple of hours, everyone else gets pissed - and you can wander across the track, hand beers to the riders dropping behind, the mayor did a couple of laps on the back of the safety motorbike Criterium Quillan last year

Ah the races after the tour. The Dauphine is a mini TdF

Great first day yesterday. Rainy day in Düsseldorf, slippery roads making a dangerous course.
Big surprise Geraint Thomas winning so us Brits have our first yellow jersey.
Two guys out already. Broken knee is horrific. Broken back is even worse.
ITV4 doing the whole stage each day to my delight. Not sure how I can keep up with that and everyday life !

The TDF comes past my office this year. The only issue is it will be on a Saturday when that happens, so I will not (normally) be at work.

We don't have it every year, but it is never far away. I am based in Toulouse. It will go right past the A380'Final Assembly line on the 15th on the way up to Rodez. On the Sunday it will be in Laissac (where my brother in law runs a Bistro) so we should catch it at some point.

Aha. Thanks.
As per pinkies video you don't get a huge amount by the side of the road. Must be a bit special to be there though

I was in Toulouse, not far from the line when Cav won the sprint. The atmosphere is superb. I also saw it a few years ago not far from home - near Grenade, and also L'isle Jourdain. A few pics to give you an idea:

You don't get the atmosphere on the TV. If you can get close to the end of a stage it is pretty good. The start is not quite the same. Just find a bar/restaurant with TV coverage and you have the best of both worlds. We did spectate and n a mountain stage a few years ago, but the logistics were complicated. We drove to a nearby town, and then cycled up the mountain. It gives you some appreciation of the effort the guys are putting in, and also the soled difference.
You don't see much on the road as they come by quickly. The finish was good, as we were able to do some shopping and visit a cafe before and after. It makes it a nice day out.

I bet. I am rather jealous
I have other disadvantages. Whenever I cross the channel I nearly always have permanent runs - not fun. Have to cover up in the sun being a sensitive flower and those mountain stages I reckon I would be deaf with the crowd.
Been by the road for road races in the UK - whizz - that's them gone.
What a finish yesterday .....

Peter Sagan disqualified, for elbowing Mark Cavendish into the barriers in the last few metres of stage 4. Who'dathunkinit? To be honest, my son spotted the manoeuvre watching the finish live, and said it was a deliberate elbow, and that Sagan should be disqualified, and having seen it myself I have to agree. It was as blatant as the elbow in the face of a German player in the recent Conferation's Cup Final, only this time the adjudicators got the call correct.

Initially I agree.
After watching it slow a few times, no. The elbow coming out is for balance after the barge. Sort of thing you do on a bike naturally. The barge was a bad move and he should be more aware of others.
The first set of penalties was ok DQ is too much.
The UCI need to look at what all the other sprinters are doing and penalise accordingly. Too often they have let infringements go and on occasion been too harsh. These early stage sprints are often a battle. Sprinters are the gladiators of cycling and bonkers. Chris Boardman had it just right with his comments. Sagan has been punished for the consequences not the action

The UCI are renowned for poor decision making, and this is one they got right. Looking at things in slow motion is not the way to overview things - they need to be played at full speed and from as many angles as possible. Everyone is talking about the elbow, but the preceding move from near the middle of the road, wildly switching to the barrier side without giving a damn about anyone he might put in jeopardy (in this case pushing Cavendish towards the barrier) is enough for serious punishment. The elbow as he spots a wheel coming up on the barrier side is just the icing on the cake.
Not only has Sagan behaved in an unsporting manner, but he was recklessly endangering other riders, and as a result he lost the respect of his peers too.

I've watched all the angles normal and slow speed.
Penalty yes, DQ no
Latest I heard was from Robbie Mcewen saying the same. Ex green jersey and top sprinter in his day.
I hear you in favour of DQ. Probably Ralf Aldag and Roger Hammond as well. No one else

With apologies to Joni Mitchel ...........................
"I've looked at bikes from both sides now All angles covered, but still somehow It's slo-mo's illusions I recall I really couldn't say who's to blame at all!"
