Do please feel free to move this thread if I've put it in the wrong place.
I'm planning a home cinema set-up in a dual purpose room we plan to use as a 'library'/quiet reading room and as a home cinema room - with a 4k projector (hopefully the price will drop soon!) and a 105" drop down screen in front of book cases.
The plan is to use a pair of Frugelhorns (Frugel3) as the L & R speakers and to make a centre speaker using the same Alpair 7.3 driver as used in the Frugelhorns. For rear speakers I'm planing to use a pair of NXT panels (Carlsbro NLightN) that I picked up cheap on ebay - the expectation is that these will provide a diffuse source (the flat panels are a fair size - 750x550x86mm), I'm hoping to stick pictures on these to make them 'acceptable'. I'm currently looking into what sub to add as well.
My question though, is whether I should use the opportunity of the building work we're planning, to also add 4 ceiling speakers to create a 5.1.4 ATMOS setup? What experience can anyone offer - is it worth it?
For background the room size is basically 124" wide x 204" long x 95" high (10'4" x 17' x 7'11"), with an inglenook fireplace on one long side - the screen and front Left, Right and Centre speakers would be looking up the length of the room. A 7.1 system would be difficult due to the position of the fireplace - the choice is therefore 5.1 or 5.1.4 .
Thanks for any experience you can offer.
Cheers. Bill

I can't help as I don't like surround sound. However, good luck with the NXT panels as they are fascinating devices. Hopefully they'll integrate well?

Have you heard ATMOS before and liked it Bill?
If so it might be worth doing, if not it's likely not worth the risk.

Best advice - Get a demo and make sure you specify your room size. You might also want to consider a 5.1.2 configuration with just 2 overhead speakers.

I've heard a very expensive M&K based ATMOS demonstration setup that was very impressive, but have not 'lived' with a surround sound system of any sort - that's really why I'm looking for advice based on people's actual experience.
I've read up a fair bit, and that's why I thought I'd try the NXT speakers - to reduce the likelihood of localising the surround speakers in a room that's not really spacious (due to their design they don't operate as a point source).

Sadly I just dont have space for surround sound, not even 5.1 But I have been saving 5 pairs of Genexxa LX5 ribbon hybrids for a test excursion one day !

Heard several Atmos systems & very impressive but use a 2.0 system with a 4k 12foot screen 2 great speakers sound better than several duff ones

Can only answer from experiencing ATMOS in a movie theatre, but it's mighty impressive to me. I do like surround sound (a lot) as it's totally immersive and really puts you in the film, which is how I like to experience film. But that's in a movie theatre as that's all I do, so in a home environment it may differ?
You need to get a home demo.

I'm not planning to spend loads on the ceiling speakers if this is the route I go. Currently wondering about mounting 4 of the Alpair 7.3 speakers in the ceiling - wondering how it will sound if I just cut suitable sized holes to mount the speakers between the floor joists, and protect the top of the speakers with fire hoods. The front and rear ceiling speakers on each side of the room would share 'rear space' under the floorboards (joists run from screen to back of the room).
Work won't be starting for a few months, so I've got plenty of thinking time!
Wondering about using one of the new NAD 758 v3 Receivers to drive the audio if I go in this direction - it includes Dirac processing that I'm thinking might be quite powerful in such a setup.
Cheers. Bill
