If she knew the car was faulty and drove it knowingly and regardless, the insurance might not even pay.

If it has hydraulic steering, I would suspect fluid level. The thing you don't want is a problem with the auto box, but that can't be ruled out. On the basis that it steers and drives properly most of the time, I would look at steering first - hydraulics, ball joints sticking on the steering arms, etc.
If it's electric steering (like mine), it gets more complicated and might need a main dealer diagnostic.

FWIW I was always told never to use full lock except in emergency as it puts a huge strain on the system. Maybe the auto box couldn't handle it. best of luck with your insurance claim.

OK, but whatever, I have been driving automatics for 46 years now, what you describe is not normal and potentially dangerous.
